Subject: Have you ever dressed up for Halloween or college party in a racially sensitive costume?
I was a Gypsy as a kid in the 80s. I am relieved I didn’t do sexy Indian or geisha or something in college in the early 2000s. Can’t say I was too smart for it at the time, just didn’t do it.

I went to college at a Southern university and Kappa Alpha fraternity had an Old South party every year where the fraternity guys dressed as Confederate soldiers and their dates as Southern belles. Tons of pictures exist from those events. Fortunately I never attended. KA Nationals banned the Old South parties in 2016.
My sibling attended the Vanderbilt Old South party as recently as 2007-2009, so they've definitely gone on for awhile. Yes, I thought it was gross then but was basically called a no-fun frat hater. I think some congressman's son was pictured with a confederate flag there and it caused a bit of a stir.

I was in HS in 1986. It would have been weird at my HS, which was actually wealthy and predominantly white. They were not very racially sensitive —the seniors were all given tanning gift certificates regardless of race and skin tone. But that sh!t with confederate soldiers they would have shut down.

Firefighter
Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman
Generic princess (Fancy looking dress and accessories)
Fruits or vegetables (my niece was a pineapple and nephew was an avocado one year)
Dinosaur
Rain cloud, rainbow (both costumes I saw kids wearing last year)
Pumpkin/jackolantern
There are tons of non offensive costumes

I dressed as a bum, as a boy (I'm female), and as Michael Jackson (I'm white). None of these things were considered offensive at the time. I also confess that I've received Sephora foundation samples in dark skin tones and put them on to see what I'd look like --- but I never left the house or photographed it!

I dressed up a a mexican bandit as a kid, no brown face but it's not a choice I'd let my kid make. I also had a really offensive part in a school play as Chinese guy with a terrible accent and everything. People found it hilarious but I cringe thinking about it.
I'm not worried about being cancelled because I can articulate why it was wrong and how I've grown and changed since those things happened.

I was a black cat several times as a child/tween. In 5th grade I was a hippie and I wore bell bottoms and black afro. I was Dorothy in 2nd. Never dressed up for Halloween in high school

No. I’m AA. I don’t know anyone who wore a racially or culturally insensitive costume growing up.
