Umm, I don't think you have anything straight.

Defunding doesn’t mean ending police, it means limiting law enforcement functions. Most cops agree they shouldn’t be 1st responders for mental health crisis or school discipline, roles they’ve been brought into. This is an opportunity to transform.

I thought it was that you need guns in case the government becomes authoritarian but when there are unbadged militia patrolling the streets of DC y'all are mysteriously absent?

Do you see how that proves the point of the movement? That police are jerks who don't protect and serve?

If police don't make communities better, then why have them at all?

I live in s smaller city that has had significant police reform. We have one of the most comprehensive accountability and transparency ordinances in the country. So for example, there is a civilian oversight board (something most communities don't have) that reviews complaints against officers and/or the dept. There is also now a process for people who are in the gang database to get the information that they are in the database and to challenge their inclusion. Previously, individuals could not get that information, and parents of youth included in the database could also not get that information. The police chief and the commissioner supported the ordinance, and I really believe (for example) they don't want to see the kind of violent action against protesters that we've seen across the country. But the union and many of the rank n file officers are horrible and after a couple years with reform measures in place, I don't think they can be reformed. I think my community would be safer with many fewer officers on the streets.

Cops don't stop rapists and robbers, they show up once they are gone.... then they ask the women what she did to cause the rape.

So how exactly do you propose to catch violent rapists and other offenders?

It means that police are now responsible for areas that they didn't used to be, including mental health crises, homelessness, drug issues, school behavior issues, etc. that should be handled by other social services.

Defund the police means to shift some of the police budgets from the police to other social services, including community centers, youth leagues, social workers, home nurses and therapists, etc. Municipal funds can and should be reexamined and redistributed to invest in cities, not just tanks for police departments. What would you want to see to make your area a better place?
Thank you for this explanation. I am totally for "defunding the police" and I didn't even realize it

Yes give criminals money and they'll stop committing comes

Same here. It was eye opening to find out that NY’s police budget is more than all of their social service budgets combined! No wonder change isn’t being made. We aren’t focusing on the root of the crime problems.

The ones wanted to defund the police are the ones breaking the laws.

If a homeless person is wandering the streets we don't need cops we need homeless care workers
When an mentally ill person is off their meds, we don't need cops we need therapists and doctors
When a child is acting up at school, we don't need cops we need counselors
