Agreed.

I do think OP should be mindful that if the general rate of speed in the left lane is faster than the speed limit, she should be driving in the right lane. And, keep an eye on who is behind you so you aren't holding up traffic!

That said -- people should also follow the speed limit and shouldn't be lectured by a cop for driving the speed limit. I was pulled over by a cop once for driving the speed limit -- it was in CA on a windy mountain road I normally had to travel on my commute to work. I knew accidents on the road were common so I was careful to drive the speed limit. There was no passing lane, just one lane with very occasional shoulders to pull over. One day I am followed by a cop and made to pull over once a shoulder is available and given a warning that I needed to drive faster because I was holding up traffic!! I didn't argue with him (I know better than to get into an argument with a cop) but I have never understood why that happened. In future, I increased speed a little and tried to be aware of traffic building up behind me but, really, think the cop should have spent his time pulling over the people who were driving on that road too fast rather than wasting the time of someone trying to make the road safer.

Someone in Maryland is trying to make the left lane for passing only. It is NOT the law in Maryland. So people saying all states have this law are just as ignorant as the OP, especially since they live in the DC Metro area and should know Maryland law!

“Several other states already have this bill,” said Parrott. “Actually a majority of states do. We’re only one of five states … that has weak or no laws talking about the left lane.”

Exactly!!

No. The issue is staying in the left lane.

Are you both really this DUMB?

Too dumb to be on the road.

The loss of your entire family would be irrelevant. If you are in no shape to drive, you shouldn’t be on the road, OP.

It's not against the law.

YES IT IS.

OP is the entitled type who has to be in the left lane.

Nailed it.

Stop being so smug OP, you are not the law.

You got no ticket? So you just want to stir the pot now? See if you can incite a little movement?

Apparently in the left lane, it is. I have been given a ticket for driving in the left lane. I learned by lesson in New Jersey where they are very serious about this. If you were going 50 in the left lane on GW parkway I guarantee there was miles of traffic behind you that had to zig and zag to pass you. You were combative with the officer. Say you weren’t aware, are sorry and move on.

It forces people to pass on the right, which is dangerous; also no pulling right to let people pass can be ticketed as aggressive driving.

As it should be.

In many states, it is against the law, and is seen as aggressive driving. OP needs to adapt accordingly.

Let's say that there was not law about passing in the left lane etc. I would still ask why somebody would feel so entitled to block a lane just because they could.

If you were alone on the exact same road at night, no other traffic, would you still drive in the left lane just because you felt it was 'yours'? I grew up in Europe so I always drive in the rightmost lane possible for my speed. Even if that leaves two lanes open. Last thing I want is a car swooping in and high beaming me. (People seem offended by high beaming here.) In Italy it was considered communication.

Anyways, why do you just want to squat in the lane?

OP was driving speed limit. The law is for those driving TOO SLOW, meaning under the speed limit.

Right in the article. You need to stay to the right unless passing. It has nothing to do with speed. You can be going 10 over and if you’re camped in the left with no one in the right, it’s not legal. You can be charged with speeding and not keeping to the right.

Why do people stay left anyway?

I’ve yet to see anything about the left lane for passing only in Maryland. I’m pretty sure that’s not the case in Maryland. The left lane is for faster traffic. There are signs that say that everywhere.
