It’s a phase. My DD went through it around 10. We did hair dye that washes out. We have a good friend who is a hairdresser and said that she would not recommend bleaching and then dying because it really damage his hair badly. My daughter also did little strands that were braided into her hair that were glittery and she had several different colors. I have no problem with any of this as it’s a form of self-expression. Now when they’re younger is the time to allow them to do it. They grow out of it (most kids do).

I personally wouldn’t recommend Overtone. I bought the purple dye for my daughter’s light brown hair. You could see the purple tint and it looked pretty, but it literally all washed out the first time she had a bath. I also tried Overtone and had the same results and we have very different hair. Apparently some hair just will not hold that dye. I can’t imagine it would show up on dark hair at all unless you just want to see a purpleish tint when you’re in the sunlight. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother wasting your money.

Sure. Look at Overtone. Would be fun, especially during stay at home.

My daughter has dark blonde hair and we did a drugstore kit with no bleach. It worked really well and there is still some color, 6 weeks later. The kit we used is supposed to last 30 weeks. I figure this is the time to do stuff like this! I did a purple streak in my hair too, and wish I had done the whole thing.

Do you think mom consults him about all the other hair decisions in the house? What if he was taking his son to get a buzz cut? If my spouse did something like this, I might be upset but not divorce-worthy. I'd probably be glad he's taking such an interest in what his CHILD wants. OP knows his wife better than we do.

When it comes to changing appearance of a child such as hair dyeing, ears pierced, yes I think a quick discussion Is warranted. A buzz cut for a boy isn’t a big deal but I would expect a heads up if my son hadn’t had that style yet. Some

There’s no better time to try this! Color doesn’t take well on very dark hair though, and I wouldn’t bleach a kid’s hair. But you can try with temporary color, hair chalks, etc. Or Overtone if you’re willing to pay the $$ for it.

OP--I'm eagerly waiting to hear whether you get results. My daughter's hair is dark, dark, and I don't want to bleach it, but am happy to do some sort of temporary (or, in lock down, even semi-permanent) dye for her. Am really interested in the wax, but am worried it will make a total mess. Keep us posted!

Since you are leaning towards wash-out color now (good idea), then go ahead. No big deal.

But the bleaching was a bad, bad idea both for the age and for the "surprise". Glad you've changed your mind.

I have Asian hair that doesn't hold color well. If my DD10 wanted color, I would bleach just her ends and then use a purple dye. I think I could keep that area away from her scalp as she has past-shoulder length hair. Bleaching near the scalp sounds like a nightmare. If the result looks bad, I could just trim it off.
Tell Mom if you use anything permanent. You sound like you wouldn't know how to fix it, if something went wrong.
