I grew up poor, but I still could play with my friends, go to the city pool, ride my bike, go to the library, visit the free zoo and museums, and travel to my grandparents in New York every summer. I read a lot, but still remember some very long, boring days.

This is where creativity is born.

Not in the internet/Netflix world. Kids will just wither in front of screens.

Who's to say one can't be creative while online? The opportunities for trolling or creating memes abound!

Let him go out. He is 10, he can ride a bike to all ends of the world(within 5 miles) and grow and explore his neighborhood. You know what is sad today? That most 10 year olds can't find their house if they go on a walk 4 streets down.

I think parents will realize that their kids are perfectly capable and safe roaming around the paths and neighborhood! I think stay at home orders will be loosened and your kids will finally find out the joy of unstructured summer!
In all seriousness, I hope that parents let the kids play. Those of the age to play in the neighborhood and ride around bikes unsupervised, and come home for lemonade and a snack. I hope you will allow them to do so. I think this is a great opportunity to learn that kids don't need tablets and organized activities to have the most fun. Let them play.
The beauty of the DMV is that most areas have huge parks and trails and small creeks. Let them play.

Most of those things you listed aren't possible now (and possibly this summer.)

That was the point.

Expecting to get my head bitten off by the quarantine fundamentalists here...

But I suggest by late June, if the governors orders haven't lifted already, that you find a household of friends to have a pact with. By early June, find one or two homes of your children's friends and agree to isolate yourselves for the first half of June and then play together with just each other after that.

My kids are pretty busy right now with online school. I give them a schedule each school day. Summer will be a whole different ballgame with nothing scheduled, if in fact swim/tennis and camps are cancelled.

You wanted them. Deal with them. You’ve probably even made a snide remark or two about (or to) people who don’t want kids. The greatest love of all, life isn’t complete without them, why get married otherwise, blah blah blah... enjoy!!!!!

Wow your cool “ChildFrEE” life is soooo exciting that you’re on a parenting website at 8:15 in the morning yelling at parents. So fun. So exciting. So much freedom you must have. Wow.

As a FT working parent of an only, I know this summer could be very hard and long if the kids can't congregate. Having an excuse for unstructured fun sounds great, but not if they can't go anywhere and do anything.

I expect that I'll keep up some level of structured academics for at least an hour or two a day to fill some of the time. Maybe by then I will be able to take some PTO or drop back to part-time for the month of July to spend more time.

We're just have a different type of "camp."

We're all at home, together.

Concentrated, together.
