I agree. The loss of preschool is no big deal, but the potential cluster F of what school will look like next year is a bigger deal.

Agree. We are in MD and plenty of summer birthday kids are not held back. Yes there are people who redshirt for vague immaturity reasons but the vast majority of the late summer birthday kids who are redshirted have ADHD or other learning challenges.

Ok, so it’s a month from OP’s late May. But it still seems like July parents would say June is too much to redshirt, august would say July, etc.
Im the pp of the june boy. I dont disagree with you. Only reason Ive been considering is because I dont want my DS being a full year younger+ than so many peers. I most likely will not be holding him back though and will hope for the best that most people just send their June kids and not too many held back their June kids last year.
I don’t know where you’re located, but in my limited experience, in VA it’s the August and September kids who are redshirted. I’m originally from the Midwest where a lot of kids with all summer birthdays (June through September) were redshirted, many of them boys for sports reasons, but it’s not nearly that prevalent here. I wouldn’t worry about your June boy having a ton of classmates a year older than him. The oldest kids in a class are usually those born in August and held back. Private schools are different and have a lot more redshirting of Spring birthdays.

I have been planning on sending my June DS all along. But talk of June kids from last year being held back and then being in the same grade as my DS has made me question it and feel hesitant. Where I live, all July-September kids are held back. So, no I dont think the July parents care because they are automatically holding back. I never thought June was a hold back month until I started hearing that people were both doing it and considering it. But Ive never heard of a May kid being held back.

Why on earth would you send your June boy to Kindergarten next fall? Why start their school experience off in this craziness? Seriously - why would you even consider doing that? I have a December child and I would gladly wait another year, but December is just too old. If I had a child April or younger, there is literally no way I would send them to start school next fall.
Who has said schools wont be operating normally come September? Its a long ways away. Do you intend for kids to just be held back for years and years until the virus doesnt exist anymore? That could be years.

No, May kids are not getting held back. This truly anomalous. It's easy to hear about a lot of cases online because all the people doing it will report all the cases they've heard about in order to justify doing it. Your June boy will be perfectly fine! I am truly thankful I send my late July child on time despite the preschool making the suggestion to do an extra year for no reason other than the summer birthday. They probably just wanted the extra tuition.

Another possibility nobody wants to think about is that online learning might happen for more than one year. All the kids are going to be behind what they would normally be working on for their age because of the difficulties of online instruction. This is going to be even worse for the redshirted kids.
I don’t think redshirted kids will be further behind. They might by age, but grade is far more relevant. By that metric, they wouldn’t be at a relative disadvantage and may be a little better off because you can get more out of distance learning as you get old and have a better attention span.
Unless the child in question has special needs, they will be doing work that is grossly inappropriate for their age. The will be bored beyond tears, which could lead to many problems.
