I’m not sure whether schools should close or not - and none of you know either. I posted on the other thread that we absolutely need more widespread testing to get a handle on the problem. Keep on keeping on could result in a massive collapse of an overburdened health care system. The idea with closures is to slooooow things down so as not to overwhelm the system - Flattening the curve is how it is referred to. It doesn’t mean the illness disappears, just that the transmission rate slows.

That allows for our health care system to get more up to speed, possibly for finding that certain existing drugs can impact disease progression, keep hospital beds and ventilators available for those who need them.

We do not flash our credentials. We speak as a person not ex cathedra of our jobs, what difference does it make if you are a teacher or a store clerk. We all have the same expertise comes to this and my voice as good as yours. Teacher is not a person in charge of epidemics, we all speak how we feel about safety of the community through school closing. Equal voice. Regardless of job handled.

The whole point IS to close while it is "premature" -- that is the ONLY way to buy the time you need to slow the spread. By definition, waiting until full outbreak means it is too late. Containment is exactly what we need to slow this things down.

I think everyone in the USA should self quarantine for 25 days. No one leaves there homes. Unfortunately that can’t happen. Doctors have to treat patients, people get dialysis ect .... people trying to find a vacation need to keep doing that .

Don’t be angry. They are mostly people who rely on the free meals for kids so this is fair concern.

And we respect and support that. Nobody should go hungry.

MCPS ALREADY PROMISED CONTINUATION OF FOOD SUPPORT FOR THOSE!!!

This had to be solved just like it is in summer when the school is out. This is the rich t approach. Help those in need without risking the entire population and the community by keeping schools open at this time.

If schools don't close, there will be no plans/food for the vulnerable kids with asthma or with multigenerational families in the home. They will have to stay home but there will be no plan in place for them.

Why can't we be the smart ones who close it down before we reach Italy numbers, with struggling hospitals?

Older people teach, drive school buses, clean the buildings. They can opt to stay home but no accommodation would be made for this necessity if schools stay open as if there is no risk.
