I didn’t even like my birth control pills but damn if I don’t love what they meant for women!

I've never taken hormonal birth control (tried it for 2 weeks and had a migraine every single day, never tried again) but there is no doubt it's changed the lives of women for the better.

My concern with this discussion is that I don’t know what research will satisfy all. It seems the info from MDAnderson wasn’t good enough.

My take is the research and recommendations will constantly change.

Did I get BC at 54 because I had spent 8 years on BCPs? Maybe? Or is it that I have two unusual genes, not BRCA 1 or 2. (Do you know the genetic panel now has at least 29 genes to be tested?)

It turns out that one of those genes gives me a significant increase in the likelihood of ovarian cancer. Did I cause my BrCa, but stave off Ovarian Ca?

How likely is it that under 40 breast cancer is due to BCPs? Or due to less surveillance, due to lower incidence. How much should be spent on medical tests (to test all women) when the incidence is far less than 1% of women under 40?

I am very thankful for my birth control pills. I've had dysmenorrhea since middle school and when it suddenly hits I literally cannot function. As a teenager I had to leave the SATs because of it. As an adult I've had to leave work because of it. I've tried other ways to manage it but the only thing that has worked for me is my BC.

And this still happens to Native women.

Well, sure, but also I only am in the mood around ovulation. That would suck. I already pretty much know when I ovulate based on listening to my body. Most women should have this skill.

Sure, birth control saves lives. Women having choice is great. It also makes me suicidal, so... to each woman her own. But we should have more choices instead of men thinking that developing these things that aren't actually good for us is the end of the line. Can't wait for men to pump themselves full or hormones and then see how it feels when their partners are dismayed at their behavior, lack of sex drive, weight gain, etc.
