Who said anything about telling kids they aren't going pro? Some of them do, and I would encourage that too. I should have said travel sports. My point was and is; don't put your kid in travel sports so they can go pro or get a scholarship. If that happens, great, but what if it doesn't? Is that the only reason to do it?

IMO BRYC and FCV are doing the same strategy with their younger teams in an effort to hide that they are not competitive. They are "playing up". That way if they lose it's ok because they are playing against older players. Both teams are playing up in their leagues (NCSL and NPL) and even enter tournaments playing U13. Jeff Cup is not going to allow that so they aren't going to participate. They can't yet afford to play against other U12 teams because then any current superstars would realize that their team is not competitive and with results out for the world to see no new talent will come out either. McLean may need to take a similar approach. Losing to Arlington's 3rd team is why they are in the 7th bracket of Jeff Cup!

You spend way too much time dreaming up elaborate evil schemes for these clubs. BRYC plays up in NCSL to allow for roster flexibility. Nothing sinister going on here. Winning is not the main emphasis in the pre-high school age groups. I can't speak for FCV as my kids don't play there, but BRYC just isn't that devious. Please stop worrying about this. If you have such disdain for these clubs, don't have your kid play for them. Simple.

The truth is the only real reason to play travel soccer is the non-monetary value it adds to you and your DC's life. For girls, the monetary return on the investment just isnt there. Even if you go pro, even if you make it to the NT level, unless you are Lloyd with endorsements. The wear and tear on the body alone will outlast that money.

For boys, how many players do we have and only the tiniest percentage make it in Europe at any meaningful level (and I'm excluding Pulisic because he isn't a product of our system).

However, it is worth every penny in terms of the other things it gives, like work ethic, balancing travel against school commitments, the friendships they form, learning from seeing players from all over working at what they work at, learning that when you are on a team, some things you control and some you can't. And it has made her so much more confident.

I would do DA all over again. My DD loves it, it's made her a better player. Yes, it costs money. Scholarships help, but that doesn't mean it's now free. There are all the little extras that it doesn't pay for. But it's worth it when that is what the player wants to do and when the family is able to support her and make those sacrifices.

Both clubs have something to be desired, DA and ECNL next year. Does it really matter to them which tournament they attend? People will still show up for their ID sessions in hopes to make DA and the ECNL teams. If there's a low turnout, the current teams makes DA and everyone is happy.

They’re happy until they get to recruiting age and parents realize they’ve dropped 30K - and countless hours - and no colleges are calling.

You must be thrilled, and your parents, living or dead, are or were very proud to have raised such a thougtful, generous person. Perhaps another way of saying this is that parents should be wary about large expenditures on less competitive teams if their objective is college scholarships. Of course, if we were all using our brains, we'd need to scratch our heads about the expected return on 10 years of travel soccer investment if the primary objective is an athletic scholarship that is extremely difficult to get and not too meaningful in many cases given injuries, attrition, etc. But I would not gloat over the decisions of others that prove unfortunate. I realize that is not the NOVA way these days, or the American one.

Looking at the 07 brackets. There are a lot of teams with DA/ECNL in their names. I think you are right about the poor placement issue. By u12 parents start to figure out what bracket placements means...well maybe not VSA parent..lol

The only team entered from FCV at all is the 07 pilot team. What makes sense is they did it to offset not having as many games as other teams.

Well there is the question. Would you rather see Arlington’s third team in Jeff Cup or McLean first team. I heard Arlington’s 2nd team was rejected by Jeff Cup. Word is it was because of the poor results with both the first and second team. Got soccer has the second team ahead of the first. I think that just shows why the Virginia clubs all got such a low flights. They are just not that good when compared to teams outside the area.

I think it's because the 07 DA team is in the pilot group. It hasn't gotten a lot of games so this is to add to their calendar.

They've been doing that for a while now. Just wait until you see the "showcase" brackets. But if you aren't at either West Creek or River City, it's a waste of coin. The rest of the teams and games are all over the place, and not a scout in sight.
