Because, with all sports, there are talented kids out there who may not want to be all in one one sport/one activity. Miss school, many weekends, HS events like homecoming and football games... no time for clubs, no time for other sports you like or to hang with your friends because you're driving to practice or on a bus to a game in SC or whatever. Some REALLY GOOD players (even ignoring those who might be out due to $$) just don't want it.

Not to mention some are very smart and realize that soccer isn’t going to pay the bills down the road. School is important. They don’t need soccer to get into a great school. They can get *gasp* academic scholarships that pay more. So they may play competitively but not willing to go out of town every weekend or give up 5 nights per week.
