Do you know how much they make? People can just choose not to spend their money that way. If I were getting married now, I’d buy a lab stone instead and spend the $20,000 I saved on a few vacations instead. And if I ever lose my ring, I will not replace it at all. There are so many other things I’d rather spend that money on now. Although, to your point, if I’m wearing a 3 c ring, it’s reasonable to think I also have a nice home, car, and vacation schedule. By some standards I have these but not by my own.

I also have a lab grown diamond for these reasons. One additional reason, which feels so ridiculously "DC" that I cannot believe I am even saying this: I am an antitrust lawyer and want to encourage competition against the DeBeers monopoly.

The diamond is great and I feel good about wearing it. If I were to do it over again, though, I might opt out of the diamond entirely, and go for something less traditional.

You are wrong about the price controls. I am an antitrust lawyer and have represented jeweler clients. It’s just untrue. Whether diamonds are particularly rare or not in the abstract isn’t the question. They’re costly to mine and absolutely rare in high clarity, colorless, large pieces (ie big enough to yield a 3 carat cut stone).

How would you tell the difference? Do you carry a jewelers loupe around? Or are you just bitter you overpaid and no ones going to look at your tiny ”real” rock?

I think that is a really personal decision. For me, I would not because I wouldn't feel it was real. But if you would be happy with it, go for it.
