Wow. This showed how dumb and crazy the folks at Rose Hill are. They not only tried to stop the construction of Julius West but also tried to stop Einstein turf field as well. I’m truly surprised by the Rose Hill people’s lack of understanding of how local governments work, lack of common sense and preparation of the legal challenge of MCPS. They had a lawyer too.

MSI Soccer is certainly showing what hateful people they are. You would think when they have been piling up millions of dollars from their players and probably have millions more hidden away that they would be a little more adult in their online trolling. Is soccer really such a hateful game that this is the mentality of the adults that run these leagues?

I’m not part of MSI nor have any kids playing soccer for MSI, BSC or any clubs. I am a 40 year residence of Rockville and have attended grade school to HS in Rockville. My hate is not Rockville or MCPS. I actually love it here otherwise I would have moved already. My hate is towards the selfish folks at Rose Hill.

Rockville is no longer an isolated suburban city. Rockville residences have to recognize and accept that we are ever growing city. The city and its citizens are getting more prosperous every year. The city has to develop to grow. A turf field is part of that development.

There are no proven scientific/medical proof or evidence that turf fields cause cancer. Claiming cause cancer is similar to the crazy Hollywood folks that claim vaccinations causes mental disabilities.

Artificial turf has nothing to do with the development of a city.

Silica sand is a known carcinogen. You really need to up your knowledge. Where do you live that you don't have access to the Internet? Try a public library and do some research.

Crystalline silica has been classified as a human lung carcinogen. Additionally, breathing crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis, which in severe cases can be disabling, or even fatal. The children using these fields will be inhaling silica sand.

https://www.osha.gov/Publications/osha3176.html

It depends on the size and shape of the particles. If the silica is mined from hard rock yes it can cause problems. If it is nature sand deposited from water or wind, its not a problem. Too bad they do not use silica any more but keep on keeping on!

They? Who is they? Anyone can buy it at Home Depot. MCPS is not regulating the source of the sand being used on these fields. Read the RFP. Any sand will do.
Congratulations to the pulmonary doctors.

OK I took your advice and did some research. It is clear that you did not do yours. Here's what I know based on what I found.

You are right -- crystalline silica is a carcinogen. And that's where the accuracy of your research ends.

Please read below and then stop spreading lies.

THE TURF AT JWMS AND OTHER NEW FIELDS FOR MCPS DO NOT CONTAIN CRYSTALLINE SILICA. The MCPS website specifies that the infill being used in the new turf fields is clinoptilolite zeolite. See information about the new turf fields on the MCPS website here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/athletics/programs/default.aspx?id=542923

To further debunk your claim that the infill contains silica, I found the manufacturer of zeolite infill's website, which clearly states that the infill does NOT contain silica. To quote:

In 2013 ZeoFill was introduced to the sports field industry to avoid health concerns and label warnings pertaining to Proposition 65. ZeoFill does not contain crystalline free silica (known to cause cancer or birth defects), therefore it is the preferred substrate. It also helps to naturally cool the surface of the field.

Here is the website for ZeoFill https://www.kmizeolite.com/synthetic-turf/

So just to summarize: THE NEW TURF FIELDS DO NOT CONTAIN THE MATERIAL SILICA. STOP SPREADING LIES.

Liar, liar, pants on fire. The Julius West fields do not contain Zeofill. Zeofill is a brand name and it's not what MCPS is using on those fields.

They do contain silica sand.

I’m not for or against turf fields. But I will say that we are surrounded by carcinogens everyday and everywhere from CO2 emissions, organic and inorganic building materials at home and at our offices, herbicides & insecticides at our parks, the cell phones and iPads we use emit WiFi radiations, etc.

It’s best we all move to the West Virginia mountains.

That's a link to CUPF, not to MCPS. CUPF collects those fees and gives a small percentage of that money, if there is any, to MCPS.

Now go find the line item in the budget that shows how much of those imaginary rental fees were ever actually collected. It's $40,000, not $4 million.

That’s on MOCO County Council. Just like when you pay Federal Taxes. The Treasury (IRS) collects the money and Congress distributes to the various agencies.

And where did you get the $40K number from? Let’s pretend your number is correct, then isn’t the $2.4M that MSI gave to MoCo huge awesome amount?

No, it is not a huge awesome amount. It is a huge liability. The money only paid to install the artificial turf fields. It does not pay for maintenance, removal or replacement.

Again, see the WJ, RM, Wootton high school artificial turf fields. Installed and then abandoned. Those fields must be maintained, removed and replaced out of the MCPS Operating Budget because the whole fantasy artificial turf plan failed. Rentals did not materialize, rental income did not fund maintenance, removal or replacement.

Creating a liability for the MCPS Operating Budget is not awesome. It is a continual drain of education funds to an artificial turf field when that money could be used to pay for teachers or give teachers raises. MSI Soccer is making a choice for how the MCPS Operating Budget will be used. They want money to maintain, clean, remove and replace their field surface, classrooms be damned.

I work in the athletic field biz. Prior poster is correct. Synthetic turf fields are marketed by the installers as no maintenance. This is not true. In general
synthetic turf fields come with higher costs than natural grass fields. Synthetic turf fields have to be irrigated on hot days to cool the fields down enough to allow for play.
Synthetic turf fields have to be regularly groomed to fluff up the infill to prevent hard zones that injure your children. Synthetic turf fields have
to be cleaned regularly to get rid of debris. We sell a magnetic boom that is towed around the field to pick up metal on the field: hair pins, nails,
etc. The older fields that have infill made from ground up radial tires have a lot of metal in the infill. The synthetic turf fields have to be disinfected
on a regular schedule to prevent MRSA. Synthetic turf fields have to be regularly inspected and sewn to fix repairs. My company regularly charges
$40,000 to remove paint that vandals have applied to synthetic turf fields. Life span of synthetic turf fields is 10 years. Many look rough at the
7 year point. It is not that easy to find another $1 million dollars to replace a synthetic turf field.

Finally natural grass fields are way more eco friendly. Paying a grounds guy to mow and fertilize is small change compared to the upkeep of
synthetic turf fields.

Has anyone ever seen a synthetic field irrigated on a hot day? It is not a bad idea just never seen it actually done.

Proper care of grass athletic fields require:

-fertilizers
-herbicides (rid of weeds)
-aeration
-seeding
-watering (we had our first rain today after about 3 weeks of no rain)
-mowing
-painting of lines
-dethatching
-removal of foreign objects (nails, screws, and other sharp objects)

As for irrigating the turf fields, our area never gets too hot to do that. But eferees and coaches are required stop games for water breaks on hot/humid days of about 87 or above degrees.

Where do you live?
Artificial turf was 150 degrees in Montgomery County yesterday. It was burning the feet of the players. Artificial turf fields are actually required to be closed when they get too hot for children to use them safely.

Why does it matter? AOC said that we will all die from global warming in 20 years anyway.
