Yeah, it's cool to see your job regularly depicted on TV and have people talk about your agency in hushed tones. Funny sometimes when they overly dramatize things, but usually pretty cool.

Not for lawyers. SEC is just where big law associates go to be overpaid and not enforce securities zealously. State is full of lawyers negotiating embassy contracts.

No way. If your field is health policy and you want to be a lobbyist one day, HHS is best. Most people who could leave State and DOJ by now have left so as to avoid the whackadoodle Trumpsters. Treasury maybe, but if you're smart and talented in economics and finance, you'd want to avoid the GS salary scale altogether and go to the Fed.

At a minimum, HHS has to offer the most flexibility, right? Working at CMS, FDA, NIH, CDC, the HHS/OIG or General Counsel all look good on a resume. And they have loads of other sub agencies with very different missions.

I am still dying laughing at whomever put FEMA on the list a few pages back.

GSA isn't prestigious, but they are the most modernized agency. Every time I go to their building or hear about their modern approach to workforce issues, I get all starry eyed and wish I worked there. Most of the federal government is still working on making yesterday happen tomorrow. I got in to federal service at a decent time and will likely stay in, but I would not recommend it to anyone out job hunting. The private sector has better pay and benefits for a lot of people.
