Uh.. I don't know any 30 yr olds in tech buying 1M homes around here unless they had help from their parents. Tell me which companies around here provide that type of salary or stock to its young tech workers and pls don't say sales. Most 30 yr olds I know aren't living in million dollar homes. More like apartments in DC, Arlington or Silver Spring.

MoCO median home price 449k up 0.6% in the last year. Projected to go down 1.3% in the next year.

Fairfax County median home price 523k, up 1.7% in the last year and projected to be UP (not down like MoCo) 0.3%

Even loudoun county (lots of tech workers) blows MoCo out of the water in home value and way our paces fairfax county in appreciation rate in the last year and projected appreciation rate in the next year. That va county in the hinterlands will have more value than homes closer in because there are high paying tech jobs all along the Dulles corridor and more being built every day.

Racism.

I’m black. Racism is everywhere (implicit and explicit) so I can’t really say anywhere is “better”. I’ve been called the N word in Anne Arundel County, MD and stared at by young Asian kids in Mountain View because they likely have never been that close to a black person. I live in NoVa now and have been asked if I paid for my groceries (while the groceries were clearly bagged and in my hand). As a POC you experience crap like this all the time no matter where you live. Needless to say, I do love SanFran but it’s not lost on me that 99% of the black people see there are homeless.

NY is supposed to be a progressive state, yet many people do not know that Long Island has a huge KKK background that is still active. In fact, the flag pole in one of the towns out in LI was donated by the KKK. Take a trip to Islip Town Hall in NY. Sorry, but democrats aren't as safe in their blue states as they think. Dem states have had even longer history of racism and bigotry than many other parts of the country.

Hate to break it to you, but Seattle isn't diverse at all. It's a bunch of white people and Asians, especially Asian males....you know, the two demographics that Google has tried vilify.

I am born and raised California and fit right in in NOVA.

Although the more my home state drives off the cliff of socialism and financial ruin and I see some aspects here I am getting a little concerned.

California is cool, and beautiful - if I am going to watch a state implode Cali has a way better view and I want to go home.

If you're hoping that the area turns into Seattle or SF, you're insane. It's basically killed off those cities for good. There are more dogs in SF than children. NoVa and MoCo constantly talk about schools and argue over education. People in SF don't have kids and are anti-kids because they can't afford them in SF. Wonder how all of the pumpers in the area would feel when tech nouveau rich push for things like no kids restaurants, no kids cafes etc. etc. SF is such a horrible, horrible city. Let's not turn this are into SF2.

The problem with NoVa is that it is located in Virginia.

I am moving to NoVa but am actually more embarrassed about the history of race relations in other places I’ve lived (Chicago, Boston). The hypocrisy of northern racism of recent decades and today is as bad or worse than the South. At least in the South most people feel badly about slavery. I don’t think most people in Boston feel badly about the anti-busing protests.

VC pp here. Don’t worry about the culture in Virginia. It doesn’t matter. Remember that all the young people seem to care about is money. Diversity talk is mostly a feel good smokescreen. San Francisco is one of the least diverse places on earth. It’s just a different form of economic and cultural racism, which seems to be tolerated. There’s a new film out “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” which is terrific.

I am aware of VA's racism. (I grew up in rural VA.) That said CA has had issues with racism towards Asians and Latinos. I think the culture here allows for more economic diversity due to space. You can have 1 million dollar houses next to low-income housing apartments. There are also more military installations here which affects the type of tech industry we have here. Even though I lean Democratic, I find the over the top liberal virtue signaling of the valley stultifying.
