Can the editor of Above the Law (left wing blog) name just one female candidate to Kavanaugh's clerkship who is more qualified than Sophia? He can't.

that's absurd. there are likely hundreds if not thousands of young female law grads just as qualified as she is. This is payola, clear as day. Sophia will be ostracized by elite legal institutions and will have to scrape the bottom of the barrel after she peters out at her post-clerkship firm job.

Fortunately she will have at least a $250,000 signing bonus from a firm that hires her post-clerkship.

Actually, she'll be going into the Army when she's done, to pay back for her education. Apparently her well-to-do parents were too cheap to pay for her college so Sophia was Army ROTC. I wonder if a JAG has ever been a SC clerk?

Sophia responded to the ATL editor on twitter last July.

Hi! The daughter here. Just to clarify one thing: I was college ROTC, went to law school on Army Ed Delay, and am joining the Active Duty JAG Corps right after my circuit clerkship (wherever that will be!). So I won't be applying for SCOTUS anytime soon bc I will be in the Army.

Plenty of JAGs have been Supreme Court clerks. There was a time when the military was highly regarded and men served in both capacities. Your comment was quite odd.

Right...she said last summer that she was not applying for the SCOTUS clerkship...but she did. She’s clerking for Kavanaugh, not going into the JAG corps like she said.

Please just name one who applied and didn’t get it.

I didn't realize that's how this works. I guess we should assume no one is more qualified than Javanka to be White House advisors too since we don't have the names and resumes of the other applicants.

What nepotism? What swamp?? Nothing like that going on over here.

+1. Just because no one has names they are willing to name publicly doesn’t mean that the process isn’t corrupt and driven by connections.

I would rather the Trump kids hang out in the White Hiuse doing the nothing jobs than have the Supreme Court clerkship monetized (which they were not in the current case). The clerks provide the research and draft many opinions. More rigor is needed in those jobs

So thankful that the raging, hateful mob with no evidence and absolutely insane accusations was pushed back.

There was evidence: Christine Blakey Ford’s testimony and Kavanaugh’s entitled, childish tantrum. Do you recall that the White House hamstrung the FBI’s investigation? They wouldn’t let them call half the people involved. So you can’t say “no evidence.” You should sit with the facts that someone paid off Bretty’s debts, paid for his house, that the White House protected him from serious investigation, that Kennedy had his clerks hired and he only retired after Trump said something incredibly startling to him, that Kennedy’s son was one of Donnie’s banker at Deutsche Bank.

Republicans have no trouble believing in insane crap like Space Force, but you cannot follow a simple line like Kavanaugh’s corruption.

Why should we? Just because you won’t acknowledge that Kavanaugh is a bought and paid for swamp beast supported by swamp beasts doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t see favoritism.

You are imagining favoritism. The bar for a Supreme Court clerkship is very high. Only a small number qualifies. If you don't have evidence of who was bumped by the Tiger club, you are just making stuff up.

On the other hand, any high school kid is qualified to intern for Harvey Weinstein. To get that job, you do need some favoritism.

Look, as an Ivy law school grad with plenty of friends with top appellate and a few Supreme Court clerkships, I can tell you with 100000%%% certainty that there are MANY extremely qualified grads who could have taken her place, in an instant. She got it due to connections.

Your credential doesn't give you authority on how many qualified female grads were applying for the Fall term of 2019 and also interested in working for Kavanaugh. You don't know and are imagining things.

Just because we don't have access to confidential HR information, doesn't mean a problem doesn't exist. Kavanaugh clearly realizes that his reputation is already mud, so he's not even trying to avoid the appearance of impropriety. And Sophia Rubenfeld clearly wasn't a strong enough candidate to get hired by any other SCOTUS judge who wasn't beholden to her mom.

I'm OP - and I'm sure she's very bright. Probably deserving of a Sup Ct clerkship, as much as any bright young lawyer would be.

The thing is that with her mother's op-ed, and her mother's job, and her mother's history, it just looks gross and shady. It's one of those things where even if she could prove that she deserved this plum gig more than anyone else in the world, she'd still look like she got there in a tit-for-tat scheme. Or that she got an unfair leg up.

Imagine being her classmate, with the same grades, the same diligence, and seeing her mother funnel her into this job while you have to get there on your own.

Now it's hard to play a violin for any Yale Law School grad. They are the elite! They have opportunities no one else has. Pity the poor YLS grad who has to do some lesser federal clerkship instead of the Sup Ct. But all the same. It's a really bad look. And possibly worse. But at least a really bad look.

This. Such a conflict of interest for Chua. Kavanaugh doesn't seem to have much in the way of morals nor does he care about optics, so not much hope there.

But that's the thing - liberals care *SO MUCH* about optics. It's actually all you care about. You can see that over and over in threads about Democratic 2020 candidates - do they "look the part"?? What race/gender/age/sexuality are they? They have to LOOK the part, guys!! I mean, it's pathetic. There's never any mention of "is this the very best candidate we can run?" It's all about how they look and what demographic they play to.

So perhaps Kavanaugh is making a statement here. He might be saying he couldn't care less how it "looks," and he's decided to choose the most qualified clerk he could. If that's the case, more power to him. I'm beyond sick to death of liberals and their "optics."

Dear crazy poster,

Nepotism is NOT when someone hires the completely unrelated yet amazingly well-qualified woman whose mom happened to write an OpEd.

It's amazing what amount of crazy sh#t you make up.

Well I'll tell you what- Amy Chua isn't trending on Twitter because people see it your way, that's for sure

Hahahaha.

Trending on Twitter IS NOT about thinking or about facts.

It's about the senseless mob -- your tribe. Congrats!!

This is so true. Twitter is all about feelings. And about how the mob attempts to silence or demonize those with whom they disagree.

+100
Absolutely true. And the vast majority of Twitter users (twits) are liberals. Go figure.

You mean, stand up for innocent until proven guilty? Last I checked, defending the constitution is NOT whitewashing anything. Face it - that was a 30+ yr. old allegation with zero evidence to go on. Oh no. It wasn't his behavior 30 years ago that was important but his behavior during the hearing. He knew he was in the wrong, he wrote that apology-not-an-apology immediately afterwards.

And you bought it. I guess.

Well, I certainly understood his behavior in the hearing - he had already been labeled "guilty" by the idiot Democratic senators in charge. They actually TOLD Ford as much prior to Kavanagh's appearance that day. Any human being would have reacted as he did and it's utter BS to claim otherwise.
