Then how did they use gender? Why was it indicated on the form? I'm okay with gender being a factor for consideration so not looking for conspiracies.

I know that Blair SMAC puts a lot of effort into encouraging female students to apply and to accept their invitations. Accepted students are usually called by current female magnet students who try to answer questions and address concerns.
fwiw female students do very well in the SMAC program. I remember looking over the list of NMSF semifinalists for Blair in the Fall. Of the 42 semifinalists, 22 were female (I believe all but a couple of the NMSFs were from the magnet). In other words, I believe they pick equally qualified female students but they work hard to encourage female students to apply and to attend.

18:04 here. My understanding from the open houses is that they don't use gender as a criterion in the same way as grades and scores, but that they are using gender as a factor in balancing out the classes so there's not too great a disparity either way. And it's not illegal to do so.
