Those kids weren’t minors.
You could maybe take it up with the landlord. Try and see if Larry has a parole officer. I would bet the daughter laid plenty of groundwork in the months leading up to his arrival. These were “woke” Sarah Lawrence students, and he was a victim of the system. I can easily envision this playing out.

It was a dorm, so essentially the school was the landlord. They did nothing even after at least one set of parents complained.

Yes, the article mentioned that the kids were all fairly unstable or vulnerable prior to meeting Larry. A quote from the article says that "Larry would sometimes tell the kids they had come together in part because of a shared obsession with taking their own lives." No sure if this is actually true or if it was something he was telling them, but at least one of them had tried to commit suicide in high school.

Speaking of the police, I find it surprising that they said they also couldn't do anything about the $ that the one kid (Santos?) parents said they gave to Larry b/c their son was in fear for his safety - isn't that extortion? Don't we go after mobsters for that sort of thing?

Call me a helicopter parent, but same. The parents that complained lived in NYC. If I had been that close, I would have been dropping by frequently at least. And I think my husband would have had a word (perhaps many) with Larry. But no way would my 19 or 20 year old be staying in that living situation. The guy was a convicted felon!

So messed up. No way would it ever be o.k. for a roommates father to stay even a single night- that's pure creep material. The school shouldn't have allowed it and someone should have intervened. So sad for all those students and their families. I want to think I would have gone the the school, packed up my kid and gotten them out of there- no funding for SL schooling.

Maybe because they aren't 'kids'. If you're in college and staying in college housing you're an adult/18. Since they were sophomores these women had to be 19 or 20. Smart enough for at least ONE of the 8 housemates to note this wasn't right.

I still think the school had some responsibility here. Even if they all were technically adults, if I am a tenant in a building and some unauthorized person has moved in, I can complain and I think my landlord has a duty to evict that person. Is it not a violation of the rules of the dorm? Isn't there some rule that tenants must be students? I know some students who dropped out/left school and the schools were quick to kick them out the dorms on the grounds that they were no longer students.

This. I don't get why some posters are saying that these are all adults and there was nothing the school could have done. People are paying money for room and board. With that payment comes some expectations of the building being appropriately managed. I tend to think people tend to be over-protective about their college students, but I honestly would have serious qualms about my kid attending that school at this point. There's a lot that is beyond the control of a school, but this was, and they utterly failed due diligence. Shame on them.

I posted before about how we visited Sarah Lawrence last fall. I noticed there are some "dorms" that seem to be suburban houses that maybe were part of the residential neighborhood surrounding the college, and which now are college property. I can picture how these houses, on the edge of campus, might have relatively few students in them and might be easy to squat in without anyone from the college noticing other than the students actually living in that one house. Really wondering if the dorm in question is one of these small house dorms (any SLC alums know?) and wondering why the college so blatantly ignored the complaint(s) by the one girl's parents. The article claims the college just said that said parents are allowed to visit. I'd bet no one from the administrative or security staff ever visited the dorm to check the claim this man was living there.
