I do it in such a way that there could be plausible deniability. Like, I go through the self checkout & forget to ring up a sweatshirt that’s hanging on the push bar. If someone stopped me I’d just play along like I was embarrassed & thank them profusely. Maybe it would work- maybe it wouldn’t.
I’m not justifying it- but I don’t lift big ticket items or engage in the act frequently. But it is intentional.
Like I said- I’m otherwise a boring rule follower. Same job for 15 years, small house with a backyard, still had my V card when I got married (not that it’s a rule, ids not). But just highlighting that I’m not the cool friend. I’m the slightly dumpy mom friend.

You are getting a thrill from the act. Seek help before you embarrass yourself and family.

I did the same thing at Target. Did self-check out and forgot a pack of baby wipes was behind a few big items. Got to the car with my baby and toddler and was not about to unstrap those two to pay for wipes. The next time I went, I just carried the wipes inside with me and bought them when I checked out. No problem.

When I was a kid, we always paid for two little Animal Cracker red boxes...one of which was already empty. My mom was fantastic

I really wanted to read this but it's behind a pay wall.

I see people eating food in the grocery store a lot while shopping. I always assume they take the container or wrapper and just pay for it at the checkout.

That must have been so traumatic for both her and her child.

I live in Europe and they apparently sell juices individually. I honestly never noticed before!

I do have a guilt complex perhaps. Or perhaps I am subconsciously trying to make up for one of my older sisters, who is not an honest person. She used to steal cash from the pool snack bar where she worked as a teenager, for example. I always felt like I had to be extra good to make up for her. I really don't know; as an engineer I am by no means qualified to analyse that.

I do not believe that I have some issue that I'm trying to announce to the world. I only posted this to get others' perspectives, and it really was helpful to read similar stories.

So I am thankful for all the helpful insight, and also for helping me to focus on the humour in all of it!
