watch what happens at 7 p.m. or when the salon closes. If they get in their car and drive away they are not being trafficked.

Saying it’s no big deal to report human trafficking without any actual reason for suspicion is akin to saying that just because you have a bad day I should report you to CPS. It’s justnfor the safety of your kids right? But realistically it’s a lot more stressful than that, even if you didn’t do anything. The difference is, you’re making an assumption based on people’s ethnicity. You might think you’re “helping” but if there is no trafficking going on, you’ve just validated a feeling that they are not accepted in this country, which is all the worse if they are citizens. There probably are nail salons in the area that need to be reported for human trafficking, but do I believe that there are as many as posted here? No. Basing it on a “feeling” because someone doesn’t want to talk to you is ridiculous.

Why don't you just stop going? Or do your nails yourself?

I stopped going to nail salons entirely. But I am afraid of infection, even at the high end ones.

Guy here who goes to a nail salon. Don't be so quick to assume the worst. As I have gotten older. am less flexible and can't reach down far enough to cut my own toenails. Nearby nail salon solves my issue 100%. Sometime they put me in a separate small room - i think because they believe ladies are more comfortable with that; sometimes right alongside the lady customers - which is fine with me.

I think Pink Passion in Kingstowne ( Alexandria) maybe be suspect? There are 2 men who act like the Asian mafia running the show. Constantly watching everything, walking up and down the aisle. The men’s actions actually make it very stressful because they make the techs rush. This salon also has a lot of chairs, probably 12-15 pedi stations.

I’m not Asian, I’m Caucasian. However the difference in treatment I’ve experienced since changing my last name is eye opening. If you don’t think there’s racism in the DMV you’re probably white. And frankly, the most dangerous kind comes from the idiotic white liberal families who plaster their yards with “love trumps hate” signs and then call the police because they’re “worried” about “suspicious situations”. If you don’t understand that’s an entitled white person’s dog whistle for racism, you’re part of the problem.

Everyone should trust their gut. If the authorities inspect the nail salon and finds that no one is working there against their will then what could be the issue? If the workers are enslaved, they would be glad someone noticed and did something to help them.


This is so naive and potentially dangerous. Many peoples "guts" are incredibly racist and ignorant even if they don't realize it. And if you think that calling the police/ICE/whoever on a minority owned business won't have any impact whatsoever on them if they don't have slaves working for them- you are even MORE naive.

I live in the area, my non-Caucasian husband owns a business that requires him to visit people’s homes. I have nightmares about people like you. He grew up here, but I still don’t trust the police not to shoot him because some Bethesda Becky thinks the brown person walking down the street is suspicious.

As for nail salons, Human trafficking occurs everywhere; however, i read that article a while ago and it seemed clearly specific to NYC salons. My SIL happens to be a naturalized American citizen who works in an Asian nail salon in the DMV. I frequently get my nails done around here and frankly, if I worked there I would probably change my story regularly out of boredom or annoyance. The way white women talk to the nail techs is frequently embarrassing.


Oh for gosh sakes no one in Bethesda owns a gun and there’s zero chance that the cops in Bethesda are going to shoot anyone. There’s not even that much chance that they’ll come when you call them even. Being afraid of Bethesda of all things is just dumb.

i no longer live in dc, but frequent a salon in nyc run by a korean family and nearly all the nail techs are from Korea - a few are korean american and enrolled in college. all the licenses are displayed on the wall. the salon posts and the manager directs customers to tip the techs in cash not by credit card. most of the techs are fairly quiet, but a few, especially one woman, is very chatty - asks about my dcs and tells me what hers are up to at that time. i always tip 25%, sometimes more. the techs arrive and leave on their own, so don't sense that they are being trafficked.

OP, I would be really wary about reporting the salon - would be worried about the techs not being trafficked yet deported for not having papers.
