Watching Alex’s evolution into life as a husband and father is totally fascinating to me (he has a podcast I listen to in addition to his Nat Geo films and other podcast appearances so I think I’ve consumed much more Alex Honnold media than most). No, he’ll never be the most warm and fuzzy guy but he has definitely grown and he has acknowledged how cringeworthy he behaved at several points in Free Solo.

This is what I thought. He seems so emotionless and strange. And didn't they say his father was likely on the spectrum? I also think he's (Alex) slightly narcissistic. I did not find him likable at all. And his achievement is one of those useless, vanity achievements. I get it that people will disagree. But, risking your life -potentially dying horribly while friends are watching and your GF is home alone waiting for you- is such a useless endeavor. There are many other ways to appreciate the splendor, awesomeness, etc. of nature and the human body.


This is my feeling too. Do watch Dawn Wall about Tommy Caldwell. I found it much more enjoyable.


The movie is not as well done. But tommy is more enjoyable to watch because he’s kind, emotional, nice. All the things Alex is lacking.

Same. I watched it this weekend and had to cover my eyes for parts of the climb, even though I knew he survived.


I had a physical reaction to watching it also. Although Dawn Wall made me more sick!

Apart from the obvious phenomenal physical achievement, I found it amazing how he mentally mapped el cap down to the tiniest little crack. It was as if he had a google map of it, telling him where to move up, sideways, etc. That was incredible on its own, let alone to be able to keep that level of mental concentration for that many hours under such insane physical exertion.

There's some sexism in your post, imo. You think GF is selfish when what Alex is doing is the height of vanity and selfishness. He doesn't care about anyone else or anything other than his glory of the next big clime. He just wants everyone to mold themselves around his pursuits. He has no feelings for anyone else.

Alex hardly appears "seduced." (And, attraction does not equal seduction.) He seems ready to drop her at a moment's notice. Lending more to my opinion that he's the selfish one. But, you go ahead with your "vixen seductress" opinion.

She met him by slipping him her number at a book signing. Of his book. About free soloing. Yes, she knew this about him.


Yes, she did. But, she said she went to the book signing with her friend. Not that she knew him. But she was attracted to him.

I find Alex’s honesty very refreshing. He isn’t out to hurt anyone’s feelings. I also think people focus in on what their relationship was like at the start of the film. They completely miss the fact he wasn’t raised in house that says ‘I love you’ but he definitely tells her such at the end of the film.

What I take away from their relationship. They both care about each other despite being in a untraditional relationship.
It seems like they both are working on things the other person needs.
