OP, why are you assuming that all SUVs are equally bad?
My Honda CRV gets 29-31 mpg. It's not a hybrid. It's also about the same (or better) than many sedans. I don't get why anyone would drive a vehicle that gets less than 20 mpg unless it is a fire truck, garbage truck or other heavy use vehicle needed for a profession (food truck?, etc).
All SUVs are not the same.

If you ever go to the beach or the bay and you see one of those sport fishing boats cruising down the water, on a plane (that means going fast enough to be riding up on the water). Figure 100-200 gallons PER HOUR!
I was with some friends on their boat and they put some gas in it (but didn’t fill it up). It cost them $600! I think they noticed by reaction...

Going to Europe (countryside) frequently will change perspectives on what is "necessary" when you have 2+ kids.
If they made gas a lot more expensive by applying a tax, and using those funds towards infrastructure, the appeal of larger vehicles would be reduced dramatically.

We own a mid-size SUV because we have two kids who play sports that require lots of equipment plus a giant (130+ lbs) dog. I’m definitely concerned about the environment and purposely chose a hybrid plug-in SUV for this reason. My daily work commute is purely electric, as is most of our weekend errand running/kids’ activities.

I own the biggest, badass 8 cylinder SUV. I usually drive solo. I live close to my office, tho. And my house isn’t huge. I have energy star appliances and all new, energy star windows. I recycle. I eat meat. I wear fur. I like me.

I have an SUV and an SUV saves more fuel than an electric car. GM and Ford for instance sells electric/hybrid cars at almost break even or a slight low do to high costs and R&D involved. SUVs have huge profits of 7-15K per vehicle. That profit is used to create new electric technologies.
You should thank these people as they are doing more for environment than folks driving electriccars.

We have two larges SUVs and one kid.
We like driving them, that's the beginning and the end of it. We also have a large house, which we like. I guess having one kid is an offset but I don't make any decisions in my life based on climate change. The only time I ever think about it is to chuckle at threads like this where people are using cloth diapers, driving different cars, wringing their hands over airline travel. It's amusing to me.
