I think the aspirational beauty norms are unquestionably higher today. However, it is a double-edge sword because they have ruled out any human, natural signs of aging or even imperfection. Go watch any Abba music videos and remember that these ladies were very much a beauty norm of their time. What do you see? Normal color teeth, some minor crookedness, natural skin texture, with pores and minor wrinkles, gravity-affected breasts and upper arms, some flab on thighs. Yes beautiful but completely human.
Today, none of that can fly. If you aim for aspirational beauty norms today, you cannot have pores. You cannot have breasts pointing down, no matter what size. No part of your body is allowed to jiggle at all. You must have muscles. Your teeth must be perfectly straight and white. You cannot have an ounce of fat anywhere on your body. Any of these would kick you out of the beauty ranks. In other words, you are not allowed to be imperfect or to age.

I agree with the OP. Men were way better looking and more gentlemanly in the past. Now, men are fat slobs too scared to hold open a door because they heard a talking head say women don't like it. They dress like crap and have zero sense of taste or decorum. They are too out of shape and lack the spine to do things like join the military and would prefer to write into the Politics Forum about how women shouldn't be allowed to.

If we're talking about the country as a whole, your average American looks way worse. Just look at the skyrocketing obesity rates. However, I think the real story is that bodies are basically bifurcating.
- Some older people look WAY better than than older people ever did. There are 50 year olds today of both genders who are chiseled and gorgeous. That never was the case in the distant past. Sunblock, skincare and exercise is responsible for a tiny subset of 50 year olds who look closer to 35. This was never achievable in the past.
- VERY judicious use of plastic surgery and non-invasive techniques can allow women to look much better today than they did in the past, IF they are using these interventions properly and with moderation. However, spoiler alert, probably only 10% of the people who use these kinds of interventions do a good job of using them. Yet, everyone who uses them thinks they're in that 10% who knows that they're doing.
- Most young people look particularly terrible. I am aghast at the state of my college friends, both men and women. I'm in my early 30s. I went to college in DC, and my classmates who stayed behind are professional men and women in DC. None have yet had children. Outside of DC is even worse. I look at pictures from the 70s and 80s and I'm shocked at how universally cute the under 25 set was. Today, even in a major city, it is really hit or miss.

I'm surprised how much unhealthier and overweight kids are these days. It's a shame we are seeing more kids with type II diabetes. Growing up I would run around outside and play for hours with the neighborhood kids and now kids are more sedentary playing on their electronics.

I think you're talking more about younger women. Older women look so much better these days. A 50 year old today probably doesn't look like a 50 year old did in 1984.
Young people were MUCH better looking in the past. When you look at old pictures from the mid-20th century, it's striking how basically everyone is good-looking, fit, well-groomed, etc. Much of the change is the obesity, lack of fitness and sloppy dress standards, in general.
Older women can go either way. A minority of older women are great at keeping themselves fit and attractive -- which was uncommon years ago when most women universally assumed the matronly lunch lady look after a certain age. On the other hand, quite a few older women let themselves go and are a sloppy heffalump mess.
In fairness. most older men are a mess too, and are often delusional about their attractiveness. It's very common for clinically obese guys in their 50s to be sincerely convinced that college-aged women want to jump their bones.
Young men are soft and dress like overgrown children.
+1 Unfortunately Americans are fatter than ever with an obesity rate close to 40% according the CDC. Each decade the obesity rate rises. There are a percentage of people who put effort into their appearance and try to stay fit, but overall Americans are unhealthier and sloppier looking as a whole than previous decades.
Young American women are mostly fat and carry around toxic victim complexes that are constantly indulged by the media and cynical public figures.
