I think people are concerned because, in a preschool setting, those teachers might be changing diapers, taking kids to bathroom, changing their clothes/bathing suits.

And the person who said men who work at a Catholic school for peanuts is not normal is really reaching. So it is ok for women to be paid poorly because they are women and "only pre-school" teachers? Wow...what if society went back to saying woman can't be lawyers or doctors....why would a "normal" woman want to do that? Shouldn't they be home or become teachers, secretaries or nurses?

When my kids were younger they had male teachers and it was fine. My DH teaches art to ages pre-K to 8th grade in wait for it....a Catholic school! He is a wonderful caring person who would never harm any child.

And to add on to above, my daughter's Male teacher helps change her for swimming and when she has accidents. But in the middle of a big open room with at least one but usually 2 other teachers. Because that us school policy...for both make and female teachers. POLICY does not mean they get put of doing the work. It means they have adults in the room for everyone's safety.


Maybe use a dictionary or google if you don't understand words.


Your daughter's male teacher changes her for swimming and accidents - hell nawl. Check yourself, Mom. This is a no go!

+1. In a quality program, the staffing model and setup of the space would mean a single teacher is never left in a situation where this could realistically happen.

The only exception would be if you were picking up your kids after the standard pickup time, but you shouldn't be doing that anyway.

No, I wouldn't. What matters to me is that the program is set up with appropriate safeguards. At our preK, no teacher could ever be alone with a student out of eyesight and earshot of another adult. And I listened carefully to what my kid told me about her day, and asked questions, and talked generally about how adults should never ask a kid to keep secrets from their parents, and there was never anything that set off any alarms.

I think it's so sad that people can't imagine why a man would want to teach preschoolers. It's a delightful age, and I know men who genuinely enjoy being around little kids. They can be wonderful teachers and caregivers. And most men never abuse anyone. To me, what's more important is the systems in place to prevent abuse and to respond to it quickly.
