OP here. My thread got resurrected! It brought a good laugh. To answer some questions, yes FIL is stingy about everything and has always been and no he’s not suffering from dementia.

My sister is the queen of cheap. She invites you to her country club and then has you pay her for your share of the bill once you're back in her house (but not at the cc). She's my sister, I roll my eyes and pay up. She's done this with close friends too, and I overheard them talking about it in shock. It would be hilarious if it weren't so embarrassing.

No its not. My parents are local and we eat together a couple times a month. I've asked them to pick up.an item on the way and vice versa; has,never been an issue.

I don't think it's weird to ask people with whom you are very close to pick up an item if they're going to the store anyway. My mother would do this--no problem.

My parents would do this and are similarly comfortably well off. I also find it weird. For instance, they wanted to watch DD for a weekend. I wasn’t sure exactly what they were going to do, but my stepmother loves shopping and I hate it. So I mentioned that if she wanted to take DD shopping, I’d be happy to foot the bill for any new school clothes picked out... Well, they didn’t go shopping, but DD was playing outside one day on theirway to somewhere else and she got her socks soaking wet and it was cold out, so they stopped a strip mall on the way and bought her new socks for like $2.99. When I picked her up, they gave me the bill. WTF.

My in-laws are our this. Rich, but not that rich! I wish!
