My 5 year old has 2 pairs at anytime.. one pair of sneakers and one pair of rain/snow boots or crocs for summer. The only reason I would buy a 3rd pair (dressy shoe) is if he needed to go to a formal wedding which has not happened yet.
For me, I have 5-6 pairs pairs in rotation - ballets, boots, dressy boots, sandals, dressy sandals, pumps. But my feet are no longer growing and my shoes last a long time
It's really better to have at least two pair that you wear alternately, even for little kids. And for those of your letting your kid wear ONE pair of shoes day after day after day...and then passing them down...shame on you. Buy your younger kid new shoes. Save money elsewhere.
+1 shoes need to breathe and dry out between wearings.
Why does it matter as long as the shoes aren’t wet and don’t smell? My kids basically wear the same shoes everyday but if they’ll be in wet, dirty, muddy conditions they wear appropriate boots that are then cleaned and left to air out. But most of the time it’s the same sneakers day after day. Who cares?

This article totally confirms my belief that 2 pairs of seasonally-appropriate shoes is just fine for a toddler who's going to outgrow them before the shoes degrade (unlike adults who can wear the same shoes for years).
Points raised in the article:
Rotating your shoes can make them last longer -- DD's toddler feet will only fit in them for a season anyway, I don't need massive longevity
it might also be better for your feet -- article points to running shoes, not regular walking sneakers. 2yo DD is not doing heavy exercising in her shoes
Another reason you might want to rotate your shoes? Sweat. -- let shoes air out between use (as article suggests) and you're fine. DD's feet are not that sweaty.
For fans of ladylike pumps or this season's on-trend block heels, Christina recommends alternating heel heights. -- n/a for 2 year old DD
