Agree with a couple of others who said Love Story. She could also try the book, which is not long. I am not a crier myself but that one totally made me weep back in high school (and still does today).

Could we distinguish between a happy cry and a death and dismemberment cry?

OP here. Holy shit, I didn't expect this many replies. Some of these I've seen and they wrecked me. I still haven't finished watching the rest of Up. I made the mistake of seeing the beginning of it while pregnant and hormonal in an HHGregg and I can't bring myself to watch the rest.
And to last PP, I'm not forcing her to cry or anything. I just though I'd offer her options and if she found it helpful, she could check it out some sad movies.

Tell your niece it's fine if she doesn't cry. I certainly wouldn't go looking to make myself cry. I mean, I have cried. I'm not embarrassed when I do but the idea that it's something to seek out is extremely odd to me. And for movies, I always thought real tear jerkers were taking liberties they shouldn't, taking cheap shots by evoking so much emotion, unless the story line was extremely unique. This thread gives me something to think about --- that people want to cry..?!
