I’m an UMC parent at another highly regarded DCPS school. We once had the unfortunate experience of having a school aide slap our child during aftercare. Our child has some SN and related behavior problems and struck the aide first. Before we’d even blinked, aftercare had notified child protective services. Plus DCPS had filed a police report and launched an independent investigation.
Anyway, I don’t want to reveal more than I already have, except to say I am grateful that the parents at our school did NOT behave like some of the Janney parents in this thread in response. Also, in our case, the aide involved was deeply remorseful and not someone who had ever (to our knowledge) behaved like that before. We did NOT want the aide to lose her job and become destitute. It was a highly regrettable incident. But we definitely did not regard the aide to be an overall threat to kids, ours included.
In any case, I posted up above that other parents should stay out of it.
So it sounds like your situation was entirely different and doesn't allow conclusions about how any parents at your school (please realize that a few posters here don't represent Janney parents in general) might have behaved in an analogous situation. I don't have kids in Janney aftercare and have no idea what happened, but it sounds to me that the school is dealing with it appropriately. I also agree that there is no way for any school to rule out the possibility of any staff member ever acting in an inappropriate way.
Actually, it sounds like her situation was very similar. I am almost positive that I know the parent and child from the above post, and I only recently heard of this event from my child. As soon as I read the OP of this thread I thought of the similar event at our school. The school dealt with it effectively (as far as I know, and as it sounds from PP's account) and without creating a schoolwide crisis. I cannot for the life of me understand how the parents on this thread are getting from that email from Janney's administration to AGH, COVERUP, ALERT THE MEDIA.
The crucial difference is precisely that in this situation, people do NOT know who it was or what they did, as was the case at your school. Hence the freakout. Not that I condone taking it to an anonymous board, but to generalize about the supposedly exceptional hysteria of Janney parents on the basis of what is probably a very small number of anonymous posters (some of which may well be trolls) is equally idiotic.

Sounds like there are two sides to this story and there shouldn’t be a rush to judgement to blame the counselor. Let the facts play out before drawing any conclusions.

This sounds close to the report I heard. A student was being violent and the counselor stepped in. Interesting that the student is still in JAC and the counselor had to leave.

Thank You - both of our kids have had a great experience with JAC and one of our kids has occasionally been a bit of a troublemaker in JAC and they've always handled him firmly but fairly. Nothing I've heard about this incident to date suggests it is not being appropriately dealt with.
If you truly are the parent of the troublemaker in JAC and not a troll, then you should focus on better discipline at home. Troublemakers ruin JAC for the rest of the kids.
np: You have no idea about PP’s parenting skills or practices nor about her child’s personality and behavior — and the former has some, but hardly complete, influence over the latter. But I’m glad your children are all perfect.

Go back and read the email that Janney sent and then tell me what additional details any parent (other than the parent of the child involved) would need?
Specific information about how they:
1) monitor staff to ensure proper conduct
2) create channels for complaints about staff from parents, other staff, and kids
3) standards in place to screen and hire staff
4) standards in place to react to incident reports and complaints
5) evaluation of whether there are any structural factors that could lead to problems (ie ratio too high, lack of curriculum, lack of clear expectations for staff)
Exactly. Just saying We fixed it isnt going to cut it at all. Especially when this wasn’t a concern in my mind before.
On the one hand these are fair questions and there no doubt are existing answers to all of them.
On the other hand random stuff happens and an adult with a completely clean background check and outstanding references can snap in a room full of people. Which is to say no amount of caution can prevent every possible bad thing from happening. So it is possible the school strictly followed/analyzed all of your suggestions and this still happened.
NP here. Of course it’s possible. Or it’s possible that they had protocols in place but had gotten lax in their application. Of course it’s possible that this was a complete out-of-the-blue incident which no one could foresee. Or, maybe others saw troubling things in the past and didn’t know or follow protocol, or reported things that weren’t followed up on by higher ups. I think it’s fair to assume no one is overreacting about their little special snowflake given the email, termination, investigation, possible referral to DCPS. The bottom line is that any good administration of any good institution would be willing to reflect on their past practices that, even inadvertently, led to the current situation and make them better wherever possible. And good administrators communicate clearly about that process to the community/parents.

Its bad enough we have crazy astroturf mom among the Janney community pitching stories to the local news every fall.
Unless there is a sign that the school is covering something up there is absolutely no reason to call the local news - if the incident is as bad as hinted at it will presumably be in the news and if it is not then it won't.
