I don't think we're all doomed to hiding in closets for eternity. Maybe ghosts that are stuck in peoples' houses are people who think there is no place to go to.
My MIL, who is not religious, had a heart attack 2 yrs ago and flatlined. After many attempts to revive her, she regained consciousness and asked the doctors, "Why did you bring me back?" She said she felt pain-free and saw her parents.
When my best friend died, I was there holding her hand along with her mom, surrounded by family, friends, hospice, church groups, doctors and nurses. When they finally pronounced her dead, all of us saw a light over her body. We all kind of stared at it, like what is that? It faded after about a minute or two. The priest said that she had crossed over.
My cousin was traveling in the Philippines, and crossed and old, rickety foot bridge. She told me her foot slipped through a gap, and she could've sworn she felt a hand grab her ankle and help her back onto the bridge.
Sounds crazy, I know! But I'm hopeful that they mean something.
