We usually just see if we can find an airfare deal and then build our trip to wherever around that. We found super cheap slightly off season fares to Turkey, Iceland, Peru, and Russia. We’ve never spent $5k for a week long vacay with our family of 4, so you could probably make it work.

I am loving all the HHI suggestions! We "discovered" Hilton Head 3 years ago and make it a yearly summer vacation. So relaxing!
