Yes, up until OSSE's official count day (usually first or second week of October).

If true, that's kinda silly as there are multiple math levels available for 5th graders. The test is trying to identify the ones who are ready for the most accelerated path, those who are ready for some challenge and those who are at grade level. There should be something on it that's hard for everyone.

On the contrary, I have two happy students there, one in hs and one in ms (and another joining soon) and I am just recalling all of the many many conversations I have had over the years with parents of 4th graders once they realize am a BASIS parent. It’s tiresome to watch parent reinvent the wheel over and over..

Somehow the school seems very scary to people, but I think that many parents underestimate what their children are capable of learning and underestimate how engaged and happy most BASIS students are. Boredom is not fun and my DCs have had some amazing teachers at BASIS. And the smaller class sizes are under appreciated by many parents considering BASIS.


You make good points, PP. Boredom and large classes aren't fun, and neither are the ugly slugfests you see outside DCPS middle school buildings, involving dozens of students wearing school uniforms. I've seen two such large fights in the last year very near our IB school, which a good many high SES families in the neighborhood swear by, Stuart Hobson. Both fights drew MPDC squad cars. I also saw squad cars race to Jefferson Academy several weeks ago. Hope we get into BASIS for 5th in two years for a child who likes math and does well at it.
