what about 6 years ago? But this was in another smaller district, but a wealthy one. I drove a couple of 1st graders to a trip that was about a 30min drive. The district didn't have any school buses.

Probably a charter bus. Also to the PP, chaperones do have to pay at our school.

We are at a FOCUS school so they offer a fund for people who cannot afford to pay for field trips. They collect extra money to pay for kids who need financial assistance.

Buses are expensive and you’re also subsidizing kids and chaperones who can’t or don’t pay.

In this area there are so many museums and historic place that it hurts my heart that 7th graders get sent to Medieval Times. How about just letting them watch a performance at Kennedy Center?

hmm. I did a 3 city trip to mexico in 7th grade with my Iowa public MS. it cost $800 plus pocket change. Great time, one whole week - Mex City, Oaxaca, Alcapulco.
Then the 8th grade WDC civics class trip, that was $600 plus pocket change, was 5 days. DC smithsonians, Naval Academy tour, Mount Vernon, etc.
Always 4 kids per hotel room.

We used to do this at our MCPS school, but not in the past couple of years. It did keep costs down, parent drivers were required to sign a form that they had a certain amount of insurance on their car, and off we went. But even though it kept costs down and I do have a tight budget, it always felt a little weird to me to drive around with a stranger’s kid or three. I imagine some parents who couldn’t drive/ come on the trip might have felt quite uncomfortable having their kids ride around with strangers. I don’t think you would neeed to be a helicopter parent to be concerned. Busses, charter or school, are way better.
