I have old Yale T shirts that I wear to flop around. Never really occurred to me that they are a cause for embarrassment. Just an old T shirt.

I love you.

Why?! Such a strong reaction for a fairly innocuous thing. Lots of parents show school pride by dressing their kids in their alma mater onesie, etc. College bookstores wouldn't sell this stuff in infant/kid sizes if people didn't buy them.

My kid wanted a cheerleading outfit. The only one in target was from the rivalry school, I still bought.

Why? I also have my fake Harvard diploma on my wall and a bumper sticker.

It's only obnoxious if you didn't go to an Ivy and are pretending you did

I think it's ok to wear the gear of where you went to school, or where your kids are going/went to school. (since you are probably paying for it.)

I think it would be obnoxious to wear your spouse's Ivy gear if the intent was to let people think you attended the school.

I have sweatshirts from my sis and bro's alma mater (not Ivy, just state schools whose sports teams I follow) and the only downside of wearing them is that people sometimes get overly excited that I am an alum like them, and they feel cheated when I say I'm a fan, but didn't go there. I feel like I'm misleading them.

Don’t overthink it. It’s OK to be proud of the school you attended.

I went to a school on the West Coast (Caltech). One time I threw a Caltech sweatshirt on at my kid’s soccer game because it was chilly and that’s what I happened to have in the car...and another parent on the team stopped me and asked if that’s where I went to college. Turns out we were there at the same time! (I was a senior when she was a freshman.) That was a pretty neat experience. You don’t meet a ton of Caltech grads around here (at least compared to the ubiquitous Penn/Harvard/Yale/Princeton/etc.).

I pull out my Ivy shirt when we are in some kind of sports championship and I'm cheering for the team at home or at a bar.

But otherwise, I rarely wear it. I don't usually dress my kids in college gear either.

Yep. "Only" went to Penn but I'm about to go see what gear I have remaining.

I am thinking of checking some garage sales so I can expand my obnoxious wardrobe. Which schools logos will clash the most, if I wear a t-shirt from one and a sweatshirt from another? Maybe a baseball hat too.

Anonymous wrote:Huh. I wear my college and university sweatshirts because they are there when I’m chilly. I wear them on walks and while gardening, not out and about. If people think I’m obnoxious for wearing those items, well, whatever. People around here will judge you no matter what you wear or do or say.

+1

Nailed it.

This is why the only sticker on our vehicle is "Netflix Binge: Crushed it".
We get a lot of honks, waves and smiles.

Usually shirts with schools, destinations, home cities are fun to wear and good conversation starters. (GASP!).

But to bully people into not wearing something? It's PC-ness overkill.

To not be able to wear a college logo shirt because it might hurt someone's feelings? Or hurt their view of you (ivy? you are bragging. Non-ivy I have no idea what programs are strong? pity you)
Only one generation ago, it was school spirit and pride. Now you are all wusses.

Meanwhile, it is expected that you wear your social politics view on your sleeve 24/7 and be in-your-face about it to everyone. BTW, anyone NOT doing the walk-out and march this week is a total loser. And don't forget to dress appropriately.
