The chances of my kid killing herself or someone else with your saw is infinitesimally small compared to the chances of that happening if she messes around with a gun. You can't possibly compare the two.

I'm not ashamed. But it's a security issue, and it's a personal, private choice. Are you too "ashamed" to tell people your garage door code, or the balance of your investment holdings, or what medications you're taking? Absolutely not about "shame."

Do you feel someone will try to kill you with your gun if you tell them you have it? I don't tell people my garage door code because I don't want them taking my stuff. Also the balance of your investment holdings will not kill my child.

OP, there are a LOT of unstable individuals that own guns - as we have seen. There are some normal people, too. Just approach the subject ("are there guns in your home" followed by "how are they stored" if the answer is affirmative). Depending how they answer your questions, you can easily gauge whether or not you are comfortable. In some cases, the gun is a "freudian thing", and that might be unsettling. IME.

Yes, I always ask. People may lie, but most are honest. If they hesitate or fumble when responding, they may be lying. I'm not going to forbid my child to go to their house if they have a gun but I want to know that the gun is locked up, inaccessible, etc. In this day and age, parents can understand the concern about access to guns in the house. If they are responsible gun owners, they won't be afraid to tell you how they ensure that kids don't have access.
