Would love to hear from people's who have been in the same situation. How did your kids make a decision to select or decline a lower ranked school that gave merit money?
Again, our son would not graduate from UVA with loans but it's not entirely clear whether we would be able to make a significant contribution to his grad school if he went down this route.
This is something you have to tell him, and tell him clearly.
Grad school is again, typically paid for for good students. And - he won’t necessarily go.
Let the kid go to the school that is the best fit for him.
Why are you even on a website asking strangers?
Because she knows throwing 85K more away for the same exact degree and he still has to go to grad school, is terrible. Once he hits grad school, no one will care where his undergrad was from.
He might not go to grad school
Grad schools care where you went to undergrad too.
They are not the same degree, not even close. Miami is a no name school with mostly average students, not the same experience at all.
Lol. Unreal.

umm, everywhere. I am a European and I heard of it.
I am a European with an Ivy education. Fully aware of UVA since I was a teen. Literally never heard of U of Miami until this thread, and I am living in DC, almost 50.
You have zero credibility. Or you are a total idiot. You pick. Really, by stating you’ve never heard of a top 50 college before DCUM, then you’re just making that up or seriously out of touch.
Here’s some trivia for you. UM’s most recent past president of 15 years had been Clinton’s Secretary of HHS for almost a decade and awarded the Presidential Medal of a Freedom by Bush#2. The current president is a native Spanish-speaking Mexican, former Dean and prof at Harvard’s School of Public Health. Probably the most recognized alum is Dwayne TheRock Johnson, the world’s highest paid actor 2016. Recently, the campus was forced to evacuate and close for 3 weeks due to damage from hurricane Irma (fact of note because the campus survived unscathed CAT 5 Andrew that blew through Southern Florida in 1992).
Even if you close your eyes and ears anytime college sports news comes on (for multiple national championships over 30 years), have you ever watched the news or read a newspaper or seen People magazine or seen a popular movie? Nothing here rings a bell?

That's weird. I have been fully aware of both since my early twenties. I have two Ivy League degrees.
PP who is 50 and unaware of the University of Miami must have lived under a rock since 8th grade. Miami won 5 NCAA football championships between 1983 and 2001 and produced several well known NFL quarterbacks (Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testerverde, Steve Walsh). Not being aware of Miami makes you 1 in a million.

If you have already saved $250,000 in his 529, maybe you can help with grad school more than you think, if he needs it? And I’m from Michigan, love UMich, and consider UVA comparable to Michigan in terms of prestige, especially if he is in the Honors College. No bad or wrong choices here.
Honors College? UVA undergrad is superior to Michigan undergrad.
