btw Uber advertises on several foreign student websites with folks desperately looking for visas and jobs. they make it seem like Uber has tons of IT type jobs, but in reality it knows they end up driving.

This happens in taxis as well. People let their friends, nephews etc drive their cab.

I let my 16 year old DD take Uber but not my 13 year old. Started letting her Uber at 15. We have a family account so I get notifications and can see exactly where she is, the drivers name, etc. To me Uber seems much safer than a taxi. If you hail a cab you don’t get any such info.

That said we have only allowed Ubers during the day. Would probably not let her Uber alone at night.

I posted that thread and I have no link to the company. It’s an honest question as I have 3 kids,we live in MoCo and my spouse and I work in DC and VA respectively. I am looking for feedback since I too am not willing to use Uber/Lyft for my kids.

OP you are asking a question that is really how comfortable you are with risk.

Some are very uncomfortable with any risk and would never do this.

Some are uncomfortable with some risks based on their life's experiences. For example, someone who has been the victim of sexual assault might view this very differently than I would (I've not been a victim).

Some are very comfortable with risk.

It is easy to look at someone who is less comfortable with risk as overprotective and some more comfortable with risk as reckless. Please recognize that unless you are at the extremes of this spectrum, someone thinks that you are overprotective while another person sees you as reckless.

Of course, both can't be correct at the same time.

There are individual drivers who will take your kid to school regularly. Check with a car service. I'd feel better about that (always the same driver or at least his substitute.) And surely one could request a woman driver?

Assaulted per day, no, but assaulted by uber drivers sure. Since you mentioned the number of women who are assaulted, allow me to point out that between 60 and 90 percent of all sexual assaults of girls/women are committed by someone she knows, not by a stranger. So if you really want to assess the risks using statistics, you’ll be much more comfortable putting a daughter in an uber than sending her on a date with a boy you’ve met. However, if you prefer anecdote, please see the sentencing of former Olympic gymnastics team doc Nassar.
