I actually enjoyed the short time I lived in Birmingham, Alabama contrary to so many on here.

I've been to Birmingham and it seemed fine. It was the rest of the state that sucked.

+1 My brother recently moved out of California (San Diego County). They'd finally had it with the high taxes, outrageous cost of living, marginal schools, etc. They're in Texas now - with loads of other California natives - and absolutely loving it.

+1 We recently moved from Cali. I didn't find the people so nice though. Certainly some people are nice, but I have lived in other places with much nicer people. I was in SF. I assume southern cal has nicer people. The home prices, cost of living and taxes are insane. And yes, even the "good" schools are not very good

Dislikes: SC, AL, MS, AZ, WY, ND, NJ, IN

I love Chicago, but am meh on the rest of the state, and it is a financial mess.

Cannot stand PA. So boring.

I've enjoyed most places I have visited. As backwards as some of the people are, I actually think Alabama is a very beautiful state. Driving through there takes all my stress away.

The only place I've visited and wasn't a fan of was Detroit, Michigan. But I hear other parts of the state near the lakes are beautiful, so I'm not writing it off yet.

Florida is a really affordable way for us to get warmth, sunshine and ocean when it’s not so nice up here in VA. The Caribbean is expensive but I can swing a trip to FL a couple of times over the winter/spring to recharge. I couldn’t live there because of the schools and local politics, but I love visiting there as long as it’s not summer!

I've been to a lot of states.

Specifically loved CA, OR, WA, CO, MN, ME. Parts of VA, TN and NC.

Specifically disliked: MO, NJ, SC, GA, FL, AL, NH, IL/IN/OH/IA/KS/NE---mostly drive thru states on the way to elsewhere...

Somewhere in between: NY, MA, RI, VT, MI, NV (loved Tahoe/Reno area...not so much Vegas). KY.

I think there are nice areas in most of the places I have been...and not so nice areas. I am a nature girl and love the outdoors and some of the most beautiful places can be in the same state that has some less desirable areas/cities, ie Michigan, or NV. I.e., I disliked MO, but the Ozarks are beautiful. Kansas was a nothing, except for Kansas City area that borders with MO. Arizona had nice areas (Grand Canyon, Sedona), but I disliked the brown everywhere of the desert.

I head out west to WY and MT next summer. Can't wait to see some of that area.

OP, are you asking about states people have driven/flown through, or places that people have actually resided for one or more years? Or visited for two or more weeks? Big difference for each!

For example, I used to hate NJ, until I stayed and saw the quiet beaches (cue negative posters who have never seen the quiet beaches here).
