I dare you to say that to the face of a single mother of 2 earning 50K for whom that extra $150 a month means the difference between being able to get to work and not. Would you do it? I bet you would, and I bet you would laugh at her, too, you Grinch.

People like you can't even fathom how difficult it is for a large sector of the American public, the working poor. Shame on you, especially in this supposed season of giving and charity.

We have so many single mothers as compared to the 50's and 60's. Why is that?

There's no point in working if everything is handed to you for free by someone else.

Every fortune cookie contains a fortune.

Fortune cookies don’t contain fortunes. They contain sayings or advice.

I’m going to go on the dole if I can get healthcare handed to me. Why should I work and take home nothing after bills? I can NOT work and not take home anything.

Agreed. Poverty is great! Highly recommended!

Wealth just buys a better address. The things I value - spending time with my family - have no cost but work costs me time. Time is worth more than money. I don’t want to spend all my time working, and I don’t need things anymore. I thought you guys hated wealth. I’d be poor in money but rich in the things that matter to me.

Sounds wonderful. Write back in a few years and let us know how you're enjoying it.

Good. Why should taxpayers subsidize people's commutes? I've been working for 30 years and no employer ever gave me money to get to work. That was just part of the cost of having a job.

Hey, dumb dumb..because it is in everyone's best interest. It reduces the cost of metro commute which means there are ~700K fewer people on the roads.. which means you have a better commute when you drive to work.

Dont just jump research and then talk.

It cuts down on cats and thus pollution.

Then you have my support!

What prevents you from paying for your own metro commute?

I have to buy my own gas. No one buys it for me. Why should someone else pay for your farecrard?

People using the metro helps keep gas prices lower. If people use metro less and drive more, that will create more of a demand on gas. The price of gas will then go up in reaction.

So a hundred thousand more vehicles driving in the Washington area is going to appreciably drive up gas prices nationally?

Uh ok.. sure.

DC metro revenue relies only 27% on paying fares, the rest comes from grants and such. Unofficial estimates are that 40% of fares are subsidized. The largest employer to offer subsidies is the government. Most private employers are not offering subsidies. (WMATA financial statements 2015-2016)

People using the metro helps keep gas prices lower. If people use metro less and drive more, that will create more of a demand on gas. The price of gas will then go up in reaction.

So by that logic, people driving more would result in fewer people using the metro, and then metro would be cheaper.

There's a big fixed cost component, so probably less than you would think. Bottom line is all these f'n subsidies need to go away. They're causing a ton of unintended consequences and damaging our economy.

Exactly. All roads should be tolled. People have gotten used to free government roads. Motorists need to pay their fair share. The gas tax doesn’t come close to paying for all these free roads.

Exactly- tolls on all roads

The problem with that will be that liberals will complain that half the people can't really afford tolls, and the middle class and up should subsidize their share in addition to paying our own. So we would have half the people paying inflated tolls, and half the people getting a free ride - literally.
