I finished it and really enjoyed it. Not great - but fun.

I liked the show. But...there were some things that didn't add up. It is as if AS-P brought 2017 to the 1950s. And it ruined the credibility. No pork at the butchers, no one would move in with their mistress, much less weeks after leaving their wife. Mistress would not have that apt., Midge's persona would not have dropped the F-bomb the way we all do now, and there were verbal memes that weren't present yet: ex: "Is that a thing?"

She would not have said or done that on stage drunk or not, and she probably would not have screwed him in the bathroom at the cafe on her wedding. Not in that era. The Sadie Lennon character's real life wouldn't have been like that...wealthy, yeah, but not caricatured. I agree that she used the same GG formula, too, in character dynamics. I was disappointed, but I generally enjoyed it and will watch Season 2.
She got a lot right, but lost credibility. Mad Men pulled off the authenticity of the time...this really failed at that.

My heart breaks for Midge's parents too.

I assumed the kids being in the periphery was a reflection of kids not being the center of everything back in the day.

I agree. I'm the PP who said it was completely unrealistic to have Joel bring Penny to dinner with his parents when he's only been separated from Midge for a couple of months. Ridiculous.

eh, makes sense for his character. He's desperate for approval, so he trotted out the dim Penny Pam in hopes of getting his parents' acceptance, so he could continue to override his own self doubt.

Yes. PP who doesn’t like the show but I agree with this.

It would have been scandalous enough for them to live together...but for her to live with a MARRIED MAN???

I finished all eight episodes and am wondering - will there be a second season? I'm curious how Joel and Midge are going to move on (or not) now that he knows she's doing stand-up.

Also, I found it extremely unbelievable that Joel - who was only recently separated from Midge - would bring his girlfriend to dinner to meet his parents. Um, what? Even nowadays, that would be seen as waaaay too soon, and in the 50's? No way.
