I'm the poster with the anecdotal evidence regarding my son. Not sure the trend except to say that most black kids have no desire to hang out in VA. I'm black and my father was from VA. He was born in 1920 and worked like hell to get out of VA.

I have VERY few black friends who live in VA. I'm not suggesting that no black people live there, I'm just stating that it doesn't tend to be our first choice. As a matter of fact, I have a girlfriend who suggested to her husband that they consider VA and he said hell no! He's a law firm partner.

I think the issues are more historical then crime fighting. Most criminals don't think about the laws before they commit a crime. If that was the case, there would be less crime in Atlanta, Miami and all of those other open carry places.

Yes, NOVA has less crime. I wonder if that's more of an economic issue than anything else. If you consider similar zip codes in MD and DC, the crime may be a little higher, but I'm sure it won't be much. It's hard to compare an entire city (DC) to a part of VA (NOVA). Trust and believe, there are some really rough places in VA.

Op here, the population of NOVA is approx. 4 times than of the entire district. So per capita NOVA is actually disproportionately ahead of DC in terms of crime, more even than can be seen on the graph. This is probably because DC has a lot of income disparity and lags behind NOVA in addressing crimes is what I gather from the posts above.

To the PP citing walk-ability, I feel Maryland is on par with NOVA. Is Ellicott City more walkable than Woodbridge? Is Bethesda more walkable than Arlington? I don't think that is a noticeable difference.

It's common knowledge among LEOs in the area that criminals (or at least the smarter ones) tend to avoid running into VA because they know they'll be nailed to the wall by the justice system in VA. Can't say the same for DC or MD.

This. From direct personal experience, Arlington juries are exceedingly intolerant of criminal and antisocial behavior in their neighborhoods. And casual reading of the crime column (and the number of times a suspect is held without bail) suggests that Arlington is considerably stricter than MD or DC. Criminals catch on after a while.

Anecdote: Arlington has convicted one person from the rash of dirt-bike mobs taking over the streets periodically over the past year or two. One is way too small a number in my opinion, but has any other local jurisdiction convicted any at all?

Agreed. Although demographics here may reflect wealth demographics, it is certainly not a race issue. Poor people of any race of similar socio-economic background if placed in such a wealth divided area would cause similar problems.

Ever been to any city in SE Asia? The land of extreme wealth divides? I call BS on this statement because despite the extreme poverty prevalent in these nations, the crime rates are nowhere near as high as they are in what you'll find in our inner cities. This is a cultural problem specific to Black Americans.

Plenty of brown, black, white people in Alexandria and Arlington. I don't buy this argument. NOVA PDs don't profile minorities any more or less than DC or MD.

Also I see how H and U streets are more exciting to teenagers but Bethesda and Silver Spring is just as 'boring' as Arlington and Alexandria. but the crime rates are higher in MD. I agree with much better and effective law enforcement and courts in NOVA.

In fact MD and DC have consistently fallen behind NOVA in recent years in creating safe neighborhoods.

Are you guys on crack? When I am in Arlington, I don't see a bunch of black people. I'm black. I really don't. If I am in Old Town Alexandria I also don't see a bunch of black people. Especially groups of black boys. They would stand out like sore thumbs.

That feels right to say but it simply isn’t the truth. As a pp pointed out there are many impoverished Latinos in the region but they commit crimes, especially violent crimes, at a very low rate compared to impoverished blacks.
