OP...in general VA will be lower tax than MD even after accounting for the car tax. However, your particular situation might vary.

Thank you. I am finding school triangles (ES, MS,HS public school district) in Va versus MD where it is more of a hit and miss, especially given my budget.

Va taxes are a lot lower than md and makes a big diff
Coming in on orange line to Reagan building is very easy and
commute generally easier so I'd vote for va - e falls church metro
- housing expensive in area generally so w budget will be tighter space

But va for sure on income

I agree 908 Robin Rd is in a good neighborhood, South Four Corners, feeds into Forest Knolls (we love it) and Silver Spring International School and DCC (Down County consortium, home school Northwood, but about 5 schools to choose from for HS)

You want diverse, close in good schools. Try neighborhoods in 20901 and 20910 in Silver Spring, MD. Up your monthly to 2200 and it is doable. Not all ES in 20901 are good, avoid Burnt Mills, but others are considered good except by the Bethesda elites who like to post that Silver Spring is a ghetto.

Consider 20902 also, but check which schools the address goes into. Kensington which is a nice place is mostly white.

Bus lines -- look at the Metrobus and Ride on buses (Montgomery County) go to Silver Spring station, Takoma Station and Wheaton Station and some to Forest Glen station.
