Have you ever been to a discussion forum before? You will find very few threads where the discussion only answers the question and no alternate opinions or perspectives are offered.

Diamonds are controversial, the tradition of engagement rings is sexist. Those things are going to create discussion. If you are going to be on a discussion form, you are going to have to accept that there will be discussion and that you can't control the discussion because an opinion was offered that you didn't agree with.

Uh I would first figure out what kind of wedding you two want and who is paying for it, and other financial goals.

I personally would not want a 20k diamond ring (sapphires are my favorite), but also in my circles (academe/arts) expensive diamonds are not common and would be remarked on, I think (I have beautiful diamond earrings from my grandmother and almost never wear them). . if your gf is more traditional and has a lot of friends who wear bigger diamonds, I am sure it will be fine.

If it's no big deal from your savings, who cares.

If it would be, save it. A simple compound interest calculator shows that $20k invested in an index fund over 20 years at 6% interest would end up as $64k. 6% may be generous, but gives an idea.

OP, jewelry is, like any luxury good, ephemeral and can never be strictly justified from a monetary perspective. Resale will never be quite what you expect it to be. 20k invested in a diamond ring is never going to pay you back the way 20k invested in the market or part of a downpayment can.

You buy the ring for the utility of it. If it gives you great pleasure to be able to buy an expensive engagement ring because you know it will make her very happy and it is part of a long cultural tradition (I'm aware of the whole marketing element of it, but it's still a common cultural tradition), then go for it.

It's like buying cars. Do you really need to spend the extra 20k on a luxury vehicle when a basic Japanese car does the job just as well? You buy the luxury vehicle for the pleasure it gives you.

In your case, with a 150k income, you have the room to spend 20k on a ring assuming you have healthy savings and assets and only you know how responsible you are with the rest of your finances that making this one time big payment is something you can justify. If it were me I probably would not spend more than 10k on the ring. But that's me. Then again I have no qualms spending 20k on a great vacation. Just a different utility.

As much as you want but don't go into debt. That's the only rule imo.
