OP’s kid is probably in 11th grade now. Almost all the privates cost basically the same.

I attended high school in the UES a million years ago and there were a handful of students from the suburbs. Specifically, I remember sisters from Rockland and sisters from Westchester. The Westchester sisters became top models in high school so they chose NYC because of work. The Rockland girls were brilliant and went on to have good professional careers. In both cases, only one of the sisters graduated from the high school and the other transferred to a school closer to home. It is very hard socially to live in Jersey or the suburbs and it can make after-school activities difficult too.

NY college options are better than NJ but it sounds like the OP might not be in the NY area for all of high school.

One reason for the parents of high school kids to prefer suburban New York over suburban New Jersey is that the New York college options are better.
