I used to think that fake nails were extremely tacky, until I saw how natural they can look. Those look weird and phony to me, not natural at all.
The shape is a little off-putting, too. Way too rounded at the tip.
I used to always do a natural, rounded square shape and my nail guy filed them into this round shape a few weeks ago. They are so much more functional this way. With the other shape I couldn't do any of the things that I used to do with my natural nails. Couldn't even peel stickers off a piece of paper, or open bottles of soda.
I agree, I think that the high maintenance look is what makes it attractive to men. I used to think fake nails were tacky and low class, but I keep doing them now because of all the compliments I've gotten.

Other beauty trends are popular for similar reasons--the Gwyneth Paltrow expensive straight blond hair, the "I spend all my time doing Pilates" arms, in an earlier era the corseted waist that would make you pass out if you exerted yourself.

Gel polish. At the 2 week mark and need to go back. That is why I worry that they are too long.
