I don't think it is so much about being bitter than it is about being realistic. Churchill is a fine school, but one must not overlook the issues the school and their student body face. Churchill has significant problems with drugs, suicide, and entitlement. As someone who is quite familiar with Potomac, it is not a place I would want to raise children-even with their high ranking schools. The level of phony, entitled, holier than thou snobs that plague that area is sickening. It is bad in Bethesda too, but not quite as bad. I would choose any other "W" school over Churchill, and some of the other non W schools as well.

You're right. Somehow the child in the $5 million mansion who goes to Whitman is far more grounded, down to earth and less entitled than the $5 million mansion child who lives 2 miles away.

PP, not saying QO is not a great school it certainly is. Just saying a high achieving student at Magruder has the best of many worlds. On the negative, if you are not high achieving and inclined to skate by you would likely get fine grades at Magruder (as compared to QO) and not be as required to push. There is good support for lowest groups too. But Magruder gets a bad rap because of diversity unfairly.

Didn't believe the previous comment at first. But looked at the report on page 7:

And looked up their enrollment numbers on Glance. Where QO has 1904 total students (440 12th graders) and Magruder 1513 (319 12th graders).

At QO there were more AP exams taken with 2157 but only 60.5% earning a three or higher. Whereas Magruder only had about 807 AP exams taken but a higher pass rate at 66.4%.

So it kind of seems like a combination of QO having students try to take as many exams as possible and at Magruder maybe they limit the students that can take it or the classes.

There was a ranking that used to base the rankings by how many AP exams were taken by the school divided by their 12th grade class. So in that type of method QO probably would've been ranked higher. But I think it might've been either Newsweek or US News and it looks like they're taking into account state assessments and diversity factors now too.

Not just benefits internally but I've heard several W school parents and students complain about the bias against them. Where sometimes schools will not want to pick too many students from the same schools, including taking previous years admissions into account. So if there are two students who are pretty much equivalent, one from a W school and the other not, the admissions would usually favor the student who isn't from the W school. (It could just be the rationalization they give themselves when they or their student didn't get into the school they wanted to but knew someone else that did from another school)

Magruder parent here. Truth is that the school has some real benefits. Top group of students there consistently perform better on test like AP BC Calculus and AP Spanish Lit to schools like Sherwood, QO, Blake. It is very diverse (which I view as good), several consortium programs and decent community and parent involvement. Then students have a better chance of getting into colleges like UMD Honors since the competition internally is not as stiff in shear #s (that is a benefit). And not a pressure cooker. Obviously it has some bad points too and I would never rank it above Whitman or BCC but it is much better than you think academically if a student chooses to challenge himself and I can understand it being ranked higher than NW, QO and Damascus (of course there is some bias). I would have said that I view Rockville as very similar but of course now I wouldn't want to be compared to Rockville

There is a ton of wealth in the Whitman area, obviously, however, there are some neighborhoods that while wealthy, are much more down to earth. Glen Echo, Wood Acres, Bannockburn seem to be much less snooty than any part of Potomac. Even the folks in the Richard Montgomery section of Potomac are snots.

Yes very well spent. I would never expose my child to that pressure cooker environment. My fears about this school were confirmed when I learned recently that to get into top university, Churchill student is taking 8 APs. My DS will never take that many but will still be competitive and better educated without the stress. Very happy with our choice.

Nope you are wrong. The admissions people look at a student's academic profile within a particular school. The non AP classes in my child's high school are known to be just as rigorous or more rigorous than some public school AP courses. The admissions people know this. So my kid with 4 AP courses is just as qualified as your kid with 8 AP courses. I know this because I heard it from a well respected college consultant. So Yale will take 2 kids from Churchill and 2 kids from DC's private school. They won't pit my kid against yours. They will pit my kid against other Yale applicants within DC's private school. The admissions folks are also very aware of grade inflation in Churchill...so that is also a consideration.

I have seen posters refer to this frequently. I was under the impression this refers to the 50% minimum grade. Otherwise, I have not seen evidence of your charge which is potentially damaging to the children at Churchill who have worked extremely hard on their studies. Further, this thread refers to MD public schools and this poster takes this gratitius opportunity to impune students.
