A 17 year old registers and takes ESOL level 1 government their freshman year. They turn 18 during the year.

Their second year when they turn 19 they don't take social studies.

Their junior year when they turn 20 and are level 3 ESOL they take a team taught world history class which half the class will be general Ed 14 year old freshman. This also happens with biology for level 3 ESOL students. No way you teach ESOL in fcps.

Sorry, but yes I do teach ESL in Fairfax. I am not saying it's impossible. We do have older students who can't attend alternative schools in regular schools sometimes. However, there aren't that many, and the ones I've seen are not obviously older and have been mostly women. Moreover, they have tended to be people who really wanted to learn, as they are not required to go to high school at that age. I have never seen a freshman class full of 20 year old men as you describe.

I never said they are full of them but every team taught class where I am at has at least one 20 year old male and at least 2-3 19 year olds. My level 3 ESOL class has several 20 year olds with 14 year olds. You must not teach at a Lee or a Stuart or Annadale. I agree most the kids are good but 18+ year olds should not be in classes with 14 year olds.

NP and I also teach ESOL in a high school in FCPS - not one of the ones listed above, but a school with about 120 total ESOL students. We definitely have 19, 20, and 21 year olds in our program and in classes with 14 year old freshmen. Most of where that happens is Alg 1 and World I. To make it to that point, these students do need to be pretty motivated, but it still doesn't mean that 21 year old men in class with 14 year old girls is a great mix. Like the PP, we have talked for years about how this is a bad idea and just not working for these older students, but this is what the county does. I have also heard that the transitional programs are being cut back next year, so that might mean more lower level older students back in the regular HS ESOL programs. It really is unsustainable and I don't know what is going to happen.

It's just sick that a kid from MD would have to pay tuition in FCPS but an illegal from El Salvador can ride the system for free.

Here's the problem, and it has nothing to do with the fact that the kids may be immigrants. It's that we normally segregate young teens from older teens/young adults for a reason. If you have a 14-year-old sitting next to a 21-year-old in class, you're making it that much more "normal" for them to socialize. You wouldn't normally have 14-year-olds socializing with 21-year-olds, which includes dating and flirting, and you shouldn't, because it's not good for the 14-year-old. They're at very different places emotionally and physically. Often when young teens have sex, they're having it with older people, not kids their own age. 14-year-olds are not really in a position to consent, but they're not necessarily seeing a kid who is in their class as "inappropriate" or "adult", even though that kid is an adult in every way.

The same thing can happen when teens are in a work environment with 20-somethings and older. You get used to hanging out with the older guys and you kind of forget that they are in a totally different place from you in life. I was 16 and working retail with 25-year-olds, and that led to me hanging out with them after hours, and flirting. i look back now and am grateful they didn't take advantage, because they could have.

They can send their children (and adult children) to excellent free education and leverage free additional services w/o paying any taxes! WTF?

No, it's not a federal rule. The only rule is that they be offered education. Alternative schools are absolutely fine. There is no federal rule or court opinion that mandates age-mingling.

Problem #1. These evil thugs shouldn't have been here in the first case. These dreamers are nightmares.

Problem #2. If we fail to keep them out, they must be educated in a manner that doesn't sacrifice our 14 year old daughters.
