Both my late Dad and my husband are from the Midwest. Guys from there are respectful, generally not boastful, often hardworking "pull yourself up by bootstraps" types. They're great household partners - what they're not, IMO, is particularly emotional or emotionally supportive.

I like places where there is a high interest in athletics and health and a happy medium between being a good person and working hard. That's where my people tend to be. People who need to work hard to get money can't be so set in their ways and places that have some charm can't be too overbearing. The midwest has some of these places, but they aren't just in the midwest.

As a foreigner, I beg the OP to remember that the world is large and the "best" men, like the "best" women, can be found anywhere.

I find them dull as dirt.

Oh God! It seems like not many here have actually been to the midwest. Michigan doesn't count by the way. The cities are horrible. The people can be nice on the surface but often have very, very strong views.

I’ve lived in DC, NYC-area, SF Bay Area, FL and in Chicago so I’ve seen it all. I don’t know if the Midwest guys are the best but they do seem to be the nicest. Generalizations are unfair at best but here it goes. NYers tend to be loud and aggressive. SF Bay Area guys are too CA centric and self centered, DC guys are well just too many lawyers, lobbyists and political hacks, FL guys are FL guys trying to milk retirees. Midwest guys are not crazily ambitious and sometimes have too much of a Big Ten frat mentality but they are generally very nice.

Once you get out of NYC, the majority of NY is farm country.

WTF? Maybe this thread should be "why are men from rural areas the best"...I'm from the Midwest and have never stepped foot on a farm.

I went to college in the Midwest, and was surrounded by Midwesterners, and almost none of them grew up on or went on to work on farms. I, on the other hand, grew up on a farm. You know what you smell like when you actually work on a farm? Sweat and sh!t. And most actual farmers were overweight, middle-aged guys wearing trucker hats who used the n-word. People have some ridiculous Harlequin-novel idea of farmers.

Not my experience at all after living in Chicago for two years. “Nice values” = growing up in an extremely segregated region/ city where people of different races don’t often interact with each other in meaningful ways (generalization, I know!). Great cost of living, but the culture shock wasn’t worth it for me.

Your generalization is entirely true. It's what I enjoyed about living in the Chicago burbs.

My husbands 20th reunion —women were all 200 lbs or above.

Every time we land at Regan airport and ride home, we both immediately notice the stark difference in people’s girth and also the 100s of runners and bikers on the trails.

I love Chicago and the Midwest but when you go to Wrigley Field it is amazing to see the men and women who are seriously obese. They make me feel spin shape.

I disagree. DC is a fat city. Baltimore is even worse. All the moms in my kid's Girl Scout troop are overweight except the Asian moms.

Not moms that live close-in or DC proper. The farther you get into the suburbs, the fatter they get. The moms in my close-in neighborhood belong to about 10 different boutique gyms and go all of the time.

Isn't every guy from the midwest obese?
