The deal is wives and mistresses fill different needs, just like husbands and lovers do. People want their spouse for one thing, and their paramour for another.

Don't think so. I am not talking about an old hag. Let's just say she could have been on tv as a reporter or something. A young college guy who can get older established married woman married to an M.D. lives every men's fantasy.

NP here. The few relationships like this I know (older woman, younger guy) are for the same reason that younger women, older man work--money. The older woman either has money of her own or money from a well-off absent husband and can afford to help the guy with expenses. I knew two college students who got money (spending, car, books, even tuition help) from their FWB. Plus they were young guys who liked the extra action. Three guys, two of whom dated the older FWB as well as girls their own age. One did not date anyone else, but spent the rest of his time studying and working (he was working his way through school and this relationship helped a lot).

My friend's been having an affair for 25 years. She's been married for 29. She's very happy.

At least one of them doesn’t want to get divorced. Kids, money, religious/cultural/societal norms, etc.

Also, most of the time, they don’t want to actually be together in a “real” relationship. They don’t want to deal with the shame, distrust, and other drama that stems from being the paramour-cum-spouse. And they realize that if they don’t end up with their AP, they are untouchable in the dating market.

It’s safest to quietly have an affair on the side.

My grandparents. 40-plus years.

My grandmother dated him but my great grandfather didn't like him and broke them up. He got married, she got involved with someone else. Somehow they got back together and started an affair, had my mom. Grandma got married but they were together until he died when my mom was 39. He paid for her to go to college and the younger kids always knew. I knew him because he was always around but it wasn't until he died that my mom told me he was her bio dad.

I’ve heard of the same situation! The wife had the fancy nY apartment and ran his business. The girlfriend openly went to the funeral and everyone acted like she was really the wife.

Agree. The older woman picks the young guy because he is hot, for his looks - that's what he's for after all If she was looking for a fat wallet or someone with LTR potential, she wouldn't be picking a poor student half her age.
