DCPS is also having a sub shortage. Not sure about the Maryland schools but when the job market is good it is harder to find subs.

I'm sub in FCPS. I'm sure the pay has a lot to do with it, but the other elephant in the room is that the sub office at Gatehouse is VERY inefficient. Getting your paperwork processed is a huge hassle (no one calls you back, and the people in charge of the hiring are rude and disorganized), it takes forever to get through to anyone on the phone, and they are not at all responsive if you need assistance with anything. This is not just my experience, either; when I was at orientation, every single person mentioned having numerous problems and more than a few said the system in various neighboring counties is much smoother. I would be willing to bet that a lot of qualified potential subs jump ship to other counties because they're so put off by the hiring process.


I'm a current teacher and have heard this from substitutes for years, especially retired teachers who wish to sub.

I worry for the pregnant teachers that require long term subs. There are a lot in Vienna schools who can’t find anyone. Truly a disservice to the class if they cannot find someone who is really interested in teaching versus collecting a paycheck (and a small one at that with no benefits).

When my child was in fifth grade that was the size of his class every day at his McLean ES.

I never experienced a sub shortage at my FCPS school. My APS school has a huge shortage. At least once a month a class on my grade level gets spit between the rest of the team. This year, a split class will mean each teacher will have about 34 kids in her room.

It's not my rich benefit - it's yours- although I get to pay for it with taxes that have trebled in 15 yrs. Talk to your neighbors who work or someone who owns their own business - your healthcare is a great benefit - and your ERFC is a great benefit and your VRS...


Don't teachers pay taxes too? I have always thought of benefits as a way to help balance lower pay.

I'm not a retired teacher, but $700/ month for health insurance doesn't sound like any great perk.
