Wrong. .com boom started '97-'98. AOL chatrooms existed since at least '94. IRC chat's and internet BBS's and Usenet go back to the early '80.
And there were other options before that.
I had my first "internet" date in 1987 from a Usenet discussion group. Turned out to be a Trans woman, with the male parts, which was not something I was interested in.
I met my wife in 1996 on a Jewish Singles room in AOL. I also dated off of yenta.com (which merged with either jdate or match).
Wife and I are married 18 years this month.
