No, it does not use less water. First, i already rinse everything and remove big chunks before i put in in the dishwasher. Handwashing, i rinse, set aside, soap up all dishes and then rinse again. Doesn't take 4-6 gallons of water. My water is not running long enough to even think of filling that. Have you ever filled a 5 gallon bucket?? It takes forever. Im not standing there with water running for a solid 7 minuets.

Because only a fraction of what goes into a dishwasher needs heavy washing. Plus i use the heated dry on the dishwasher to kill all germs, especially raw meat germs. Not twrribly EE. No need for all that. It's quicker to handwash than wait and of course i have my kids to hand dry and put away. Handwashing for menis much faster, especially for someone like me who cooks all the time.
